Winona Evans

April 1, 1921 — December 11, 2011

Winona Humpherys Evans, 90, Pocatello, passed away Sunday, December 11, 2011 of congestive heart failure. Winona was born April 1, 1921to Oliver and Alba Leah Humpherys. She was the fourth child of seven children. Winona grew up on a farm just outside of Shelly, Idaho where she and her siblings enjoyed playing all sorts of tricks on each other. She was educated in the Shelly schools and later moved with her family to Rexburg as a teenager. It was in Rexburg where she met her husband and high school sweetheart Phillip Evans. She later went to Ricks College to further her education.

Winona and Phil were married on March 24, 1942 in the Salt Lake Temple. Shortly after their marriage Phil was called to serve in the Navy for three years during World War II. While Phil was in the Navy Winona worked in the Chemist Lab at the Sugar Factory in Sugar City, and also worked at Porter's Book store in Rexburg Idaho. When Phil returned from the South Pacific they moved to Pocatello where Winona worked as a bookkeeper for Utah Oil Company.

Winona attended ISU taking classes in nutrition which lead to a career with the Pocatello School District's lunch program; where she was in her glory whipping up dessert for approximately 6,000 hot lunches that were prepared daily. She worked for the school district until 1983 when she retired after 19 years of service.

Winona and Phil enjoyed traveling, camping, and fishing (she was a good sport because it was Phil who enjoyed fishing and she went along to keep him company!)
She also enjoyed reading, sewing, crocheting, (she made afghans for anyone who mentioned they wanted one) and cooking and cooking and cooking!!

Winona has resided in the Pocatello community for the past 66 years. She is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She served diligently in the Primary, Young Women, Relief Society, and as a Visiting Teacher.

She enjoyed being involved in the lives of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Attending sports events, dance recitals, music events, camping outings, and family get-together.

Winona is survived by her daughter Jeanne Hymas (Eric Hymas), Grandchildren: Staci Larsen (Brett), Torrey Hymas (Kimberly), Brooke Mitchell (Travis), Jamie Combe (Cody), and Kristi Bowen (Paul), and eleven great-grandchildren: Damon, Broc, and Gage Larsen, Paige, Aubrey, and Drew Hymas, Kennadi Mitchell, Parker and Connor Combe, Bailei and Carter Bowen.
