Winfield Paul La Prairie passed February 19, 2017 at the home of his mother Evelyn Evans, at Fort Hall, Idaho. Winfield was born to Lyman La Prairie and Evelyn Alvarez (Evans) on October 16, 1969, in Chicago, Illinois. Win was an enrolled member of the Ojibwe Tribe of Cass Lake, Minnesota, and a descendant member of the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes of Fort Hall, Idaho. Win graduated from Shoshone-Bannock High School and attended college courses after that. He was a longtime firefighter and a member of the Sho-Ban Strike Team, and also worked for the Bureau of Land Management as a Wildland Firefighter at Mackay, Idaho. Win enjoyed his work and family and friends, and always had a smile and a joke for everyone. He liked to go to sports events and tribal gatherings, and enjoyed gambling and talking to people wherever he would meet them. He enjoyed the outdoors and was always available if someone needed a hand. Winfield was preceded in death by his father, Lyman; his sister, Yvonne Marie La Prairie; and his nephew, Adrian Johnson Ramirez. He is survived by his mother, Evelyn Evans; his daughter, Hailey Farmer and grandson Dante Pahvitse of Fort Hall, ID.; his son, Winfield La Prairie Jr.; and granddaughter, Inez Marie La Prairie of Lapwai, ID.; sisters, Karen Johnson, (Raymond Merrill) Siren, WI., Irene (Myles) Buchanan, Missoula, MT., and Ima Evans of Pocatello, ID.; brothers, Daniel La Prairie of San Carlos, AZ., and Joel (Christina) Evans of Missoula, MT. Winfield loved his many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles, and his close brothers in life, Leo Bear, Frank LaVatta, Chris Rodriquez, and Jeff Nappo. A viewing will be held at Timbee Hall from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 21, 2017. A second viewing and Rosary service will be held from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., that evening at Colonial Funeral Home, 2005 S. 4th Ave. (faces S. 4th St.) in Pocatello. Winfield will then be taken to Minnesota for traditional services and burial at Prince of Peace Mission Cemetery, Cass Lake Minnesota.
