Vernon James Bishop

October 26, 1933 — February 16, 2010

POCATELLO " Vernon James Bishop, 76, long-time Blackfoot resident passed away February 16, 2010 at the Idaho State Veterans Home surrounded by family.
Vernon was born October 26, 1933 in Idaho Falls, to Harold James and Jesse Hazel (Beazer) Bishop. He was raised and educated in the Idaho Falls area. He served as a missionary for his church to the Western States Mission and primarily served in the Colorado area.
Vernon married his sweetheart, Julia Annette Cuthbert on May 11, 1956 in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. In September of 1956, Vernon enlisted with the U.S. Army and served his country as a Medical Corpsman and was stationed for some time in Korea. He was honorably discharged in June of 1958. He was quietly proud of his military service and the lasting patriotism it afforded his family.
In the early 1960's their young family moved to Blackfoot where they made a home. Vernon worked at Kraft for 30 years; he then took a position with the City of Blackfoot at the landfill, where he worked for 10 more years when he retired. He and Julia moved to Pocatello in the fall of 2002, to be nearer his medical providers. They lived in the St. Anthony Place apartments and found great joy and fulfillment while there. On his birthday in 2007 he was admitted to the Idaho State Veterans Home and was dearly cared for by many there. It was initially hard for him to be at the veteran's home and have his wife still at St. Anthony Place, but once she was able to move into his room, it was surely home for both of them.
Vernon was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and honorably held the office of High Priest. His hobbies and interest were easily found in his flower garden, playing chess, fishing, camping, and models.
Vernon is survived and will be dearly missed by his wife nearly 54 years, Julia Bishop; son, David John Bishop of Blackfoot; daughter, Vernetta Parsons of Pocatello; son, Steven James Bishop of Blackfoot; Loretta Bishop Smith of Springfield; son, DeOr Holyoak Bishop of Boise; 19 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
Vernon was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Jesse Bishop; brothers, Lowell, Stanley, Don, Weston, and DeOr Bishop; and two grandchildren, James and Vicki Bishop.
