Vernon LaDell Caldwell, 90, passed away Monday, January 20, 2014 of natural causes. He was born April 5, 1923, in Pocatello, Idaho, son of Vern and Della Caldwell. Vernon attended Pocatello High school. After High School he enlisted in the U. S. Army on March 26, 1943, served, and was honorably discharged on December 7, 1945. During WWII, he served as a guard for prisoners. He reenlisted in the U.S. Navy, during the Korean War, on August 17, 1954 where he served aboard the USS Helena . He was honorably discharged on October 6, 1964. After leaving the military, he worked for the Union Pacific Rail Road as a carman from 1964 to 1981. Vernon had a love for model airplanes, and collected die casts of heavy equipment vehicles. He was also a member of the Railroad modelers club. Every year, he enjoyed the Eastern Idaho State Fair and also the spring expo held at the Holt Arena in Pocatello. He enjoyed traveling with his mother and father. In his later years, he enjoyed going to lunch with his nephew, Ben Babb. Vernon was a member of the LDS church. Vernon is survived by numerous cousins. Ernie Lee Tolman, Richard C.Tolman, and Charles Tolman, all of Pocatello, Idaho, Robert Tolman, Basalt, Idaho, Myrna Semmons, Washington, And other cousins and family. He is preceeded in death by his father, Vern Caldwell and his mother, Della Caldwell and all immediate family. Military rites will be held at 2 pm Friday, January 24, 2014 at Restlawn Memorial Gardens, and a gathering will be held from 1- 1:30 pm prior to the services at Colonial Funeral Home, 2005 S. 4th Ave. Pocatello, Idaho.
