Trae Smith

Trae Kaden Smith, 17, passed away on Monday, July 25, 2016. Trae was born to his mother Patti, on October 18, 1998 in Rexburg, Idaho at Madison Memorial Hospital. He and his mother lived with his grandparents, Bryce and Lorinda Bell, for most of his 1 st year. He was a wonderful and chubby little baby who was "the boss of the world" by the time he was three (his words, as his brother recalls). He met the man who chose to be his father, Jared Barton, his big brother, Dustin, and his sister, Samantha, when he was 10 months old. He was a cheese-ball from the start and entertained all those in his company since before he could walk. After moving to Pocatello when he was a toddler, he attended Green Acres Elementary, where he continued to entertain. He was a helpful, happy child who even helped his future dad propose to his mom. His older brother taught him how to skateboard when he was 8, and his passion for skateboarding began. With a lot of practice he ended up winning multiple skate competitions around Pocatello. Skateboarding and hanging with his friends occupied most of his free time. As Trae got older, being informed became increasingly important to him. He made significant effort to keep informed about world events and to always search for the truth behind news, politics and conspiracies. He went through a dark period as a teenager with some poor choices and depression. But God brought him through that with love, support, and direction from his parents and many others. He made friendships with some great kids who helped shape his direction on his path to God. We thank God for those people who guided him to youth groups and bible studies, which were part of his decision to be baptized and have a relationship with Jesus Christ. Over the next 2 years or so, his personality went through a lot of development. While he still struggled with some things, his compassion for others and his desire to be a better man became so much stronger. One of his favorite things in school was working with the special needs kids in his peer tutor class. He was considering making that his profession. His outlook on life continued to improve. He became much happier and content with life. Two days before he passed, he told his mother that he was very happy; he had forgiveness in his heart. He said he was good with God and that if he died today, it would be alright. It was the happiest his mother had ever seen him. In his mothers eyes, he was radiating with joy, which at that time seemed out of character for him. Now we know that those words were not a coincidence but a gift from God of reassurance of where Trae is now...in his loving Father's arms in Heaven. Family will receive friends on Thursday, July 28, 2016 from 6-8 pm at Colonial Funeral Home, 2005 S. 4 th Ave. Pocatello, ID. Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 29, 2016 at 11 am at Grace Lutheran Church, 1350 Baldy Ave, Pocatello, ID 83201 with a viewing for one hour prior. Burial will follow at Mountain View Cemetery, 1520 S. 5 th Ave. Pocatello, ID 83204.
