JEROME, ID - Thelma O. (Stoddard) Weston, age 101, died peacefully at the Creekside Care Center in Jerome, Idaho, on Monday, July 9, 2012. Thelma was born September 27, 1910, at Lyman, Idaho, to Archibald W. and Eliza Gilbert Stoddard. Her folks moved the family to Pocatello in the fall of 1922, where she lived until September of 2004. She then moved to Jerome, Idaho, to be closer to her son. She attended Lincoln and Emerson grade schools, Irving Junior High School, starting the first day it opened, and Pocatello High School. The summer of 1927, the Union Pacific Railroad in Pocatello promoted a beauty contest in the Memorial Building. Thelma entered it and won the title of the first Miss Pocatello. On December 1, 1928, she married her high school sweetheart, John R. Weston. They were later sealed in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. They had three children, Barbara Hale of Rupert, Donna Weston (deceased), and John R. Weston Jr. of Jerome. Thelma was an active member of the LDS Church and a member of AARP chapter No. 288, NARFE, Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, the Golden Age Dance Club. She was local president and state president of the Ladies' Auxiliary to the National Association of Letter Carriers. She was a volunteer at the Senior Center, giving many hours of service. Her hobbies are crocheting, knitting, embroidery, sewing and collecting creamer and sugar sets. She is survived by her 2 brothers: Archie (Margene) Stoddard and Almo (Marionee) Stoddard; a son, John R. (Persis) Weston Jr.; a daughter Barbara Jean Weston (Gerald) Hale; eight grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, 39 great-great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband John, a daughter, Donna Mae Weston; a brother, Arley (Eva) Stoddard; a sister, Lila Bates; an infant sister, Mary Eliza; a set of twin sisters, Vilda (Wallace) Busby and Verda (Bill) Whitham; 3 great-grandchildren, Braxton Hale, Steven Bryant and Amanda Hale, and 1 great-great-grandchild, Isabella Davis. A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 12, 2012, at Mountain View Cemetery. A visitation will be held prior to the service from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at City Creek LDS Ward, 655 S. Grant, with a luncheon following the visitation until 2 p.m. Arrangements are under the direction of Colonial Funeral Home.
