Thelma Lavon Wells

d. July 14, 2013

Thelma LaVon Stone Wells, age 84, of Pocatello, Idaho, died July 14 th 2013 at her home sixteen months after being diagnosed with cancer. Born August 5th 1928 in Ogden, Utah, she was the first of nine children to Samuel Mark and Thelma Stone. She was raised in Springdale and View outside Burley, Idaho. Early education was in the two-room Springdale School (where her first granddaughter attended kindergarten many years later) and she graduated from Burley High School. While working after school at the F.W. Woolworth store she met the new manager, Wendell Wells and they married after she graduated. Wendell said, "I Found a Million Dollar Baby In a 5 and 10 Cent Store." They lived in Texas, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Utah before settling in Pocatello. LaVon worked for a time at the Newberry's store and later as an aide at the Chubbuck Elementary School with the second grade, but mostly she was a homemaker and wife and mother. Active in the LDS church, she served in the ward and stake Primary for many years. She also served in the ward Relief Society, M.I.A. as ward librarian and on the Scout Committee in later years. She was also called to the genealogy extraction program for many years and served as a service missionary at the Employment Center. She enjoyed travel, especially on the Oregon coast, camping, reading and the theater. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family. Surviving family include her sons, Wendell Lee (Mary) Wells, Von Dean (Pam) Wells, grandchildren, Camille Wells, Alison Wells and Anthony Bates, and six great-grandchildren. Surviving siblings are Donna Mae Carlsen, Maureen Williams, Shanna Elaine (Clinon) Mitchell, Raymond Leon (Alice) Stone, Carl Ricks(LaRae) Stone and Kent R. (Juanita) Stone. She was predeceased by her husband Wendell Lee Wells Sr., parents, Samuel Mark and Thelma Stone, brothers Keith Stone and Boyd Mark Stone and brothers-in-law Thomas Carlsen and Paul Williams. Her family would like to acknowledge with heartfelt thanks the many kind acts, visits and meals from family and friends that made LaVon's final days easier and happier. Funeral services for LaVon will be held on Friday, July 19, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. at the Holman LDS Ward located at 4890 Whitaker Road in Chubbuck. There will be a visitation for family and friends on Thursday, July 18, 2013 from 6-8:00 P.M. at Colonial Funeral Home, 2005 South 4th Avenue, 233-1500 as well as at the church on Friday one hour prior to services. Burial will be at Mountain View Cemetery.
