Sylvia Amelia Allred Whitney was born on January 4, 1952, in Portland, Oregon. She was adopted by David and Inez Allred, and spent her childhood in Bountiful, Utah. Sylvia later attended BYU in Provo, Utah.
She married Terry Lynn Whitney on August 6, 1971, in Las Vegas, Nevada, and they had five children: Jesse, Shaunell, Christian, David, and Danaan. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple on April 27, 1981.
Sylvia had a great love of music, and played the piano, violin, viola, cello, guitar, and organ.
She was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints all her life. Sylvia even served as the ward organist for many years, and participated in many local orchestras.
In addition to music, Sylvia enjoyed knitting, sewing, calligraphy, yard work, crocheting, embroidery, reading, watching her grandchildren play sports and perform, traveling with her husband, horseback riding, and owned 2 motorcycles. She also loved camping and being outdoors with her family.
Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents David and Inez Allred, her in-laws Charles and Ernestine Whitney, and her brother Richard Allred.
She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Terry Whitney of Pocatello, Idaho; children: Jesse Whitney (Marinette, WI), Shaunell (Spencer) Sorensen (Saratoga Springs, UT), Christian (Celeste) Whitney (Blackfoot, ID), David Whitney (Huntington Beach, CA), and Danaan Whitney (Culver City, CA); 10 grandchildren; sister Mary Jensen (North Salt Lake, UT); and brother Stephen Allred (Reno, NV).
Sylvia’s family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at Portneuf Medical Center, Idaho Kidney Institute, Monte Vista Health Care Center, and Enhabit Home Health for the excellent care provided to their wife and mother. They would also like to thank the members of the Pocatello 37th Ward and the Tyhee Stake for all the service and care shown on behalf of Sylvia.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 15, 2023, at the Pocatello 37th Ward building located at 333 South Treaty Hwy, Pocatello, ID 83202. Sylvia’s family will greet friends and others at a viewing to take place for one hour prior to the funeral services. Interment will take place on Saturday, September 16, 2023, at the Lakeview Cemetery in Bountiful, Utah.
