Susan Kay Hepworth

August 2, 1953 — April 15, 2023

Susan Kay Shumway (August 2, 1953 - April 15, 2023) lived a beautifully poetic life from beginning to end. A playful and free-spirited woman, she lived life by the beat of her own drum. Born to Kay and Helen Shumway in a Rawlins Wyoming penitentiary, she eventually escaped (haha love you ma) and settled down to raise her family in Grover, Wyoming.

Susan battled internal demons most of her adult life, before successfully defeating them in the weeks and days leading up to her passing. The warmth and glow of love that she radiated in her final days were a powerful reminder of the amazingly strong and beautiful woman she was.

Susan was a remarkable human in every aspect of life. She loved playing in the outdoors and thoroughly enjoyed camping under the stars while nestled up next to a campfire. Sitting around a table playing games with loved ones would pacify her for days upon days. She loved unconditionally, and made sure we always knew that. Her sense of humor was unmatched; she loved to make people laugh. Most importantly, Susan was an amazing and caring mom and nana. Susan is survived by three beautiful babies and there was never a day that they weren’t in her thoughts. Her children, Allan Hepworth, Amanda Peterson, and Emma Sutherland, as well as the majority of her seven grandchildren, were grateful to be at her side showering in her love’s glow as she passed.

A memorial and remembrance is being planned and will tentatively occur in mid-July at Big Springs Campground, outside of Lava Hot Springs. More information will be shared by her family when details are finalized.

One of Susan’s passions included caring for others. She embodied the sentiment of caring for others before yourself and lived by this motto throughout her life. She was a strong advocate of mental health awareness and the family suggests that any memorial contributions be sent to charities that support mental health.
