Steven Dwight Vasterling, 77, passed away on October 27, 2024.
He was born February 22, 1947, in South Dakota to Earl and Doris Vasterling. He was raised in Roseburg, OR. Steve was very athletic and started as a young boy, playing football and basketball. He grew up loving to go hunting and fishing with his dad and many friends. In 1965 he was recruited and received a scholarship to play football for Idaho State.
In 1970 he had his left arm amputated due to cancer, but Steve would not let that hold him back. He completed his schooling receiving his degree from Idaho State University. He later continued his passion for sports and sharing that while working with Special Olympics. Golf quickly became a favorite sport in high school and carried over to all parts of his life where he even was able to get the elusive hole in one at the American Falls Golf Course on July 23, 1986.
Steve continued to build his life and family, having 2 daughters, Staci and Jennie. He began to work with the state of Idaho in the Department of Health and Welfare. He met the love of his life, Karen, and they were married in February of 1992, joining their families together and taking on the package deal of adding Todd, Tina, Scott and Dan. When the Pocatello Women's Correctional Center opened, he was an instrumental part in developing the recreations programs there. He retired from a long career with the State and began the later part of his life enjoying going to his grandchildren’s sporting events, golfing and hunting with his many friends.
He loved to continue his support for Idaho State and the Bengal Football program by being a booster and a season ticket holder for many years. He would often share his memories of playing for ISU and his time there.
Steve had many medical battles in his life that he took on and overcame, never letting any of them hold him back from being himself and winning with a smile. On Sunday, October 27, 2024 Steve left on his own terms and passed away with the love of his family by his side.
He is survived by Karen (Wife); children, Staci, Jennie, Todd, Tina, Scott, Dan; 14 grand children and one great grandchild. He was preceded in death by Earl and Doris Vasterling (Parents); Walter and Olitha Ward (Father/Mother In-Law); and two sisters, Dawn and Rhonda.
