Steven Chavez, 80, passed away on Tuesday 8/14/2018. He was born to Max and Alice Chavez on August 19, 1937 in Nageezi, New Mexico. His Navajo clan: Himself- Todichinii - Bitter Water Clan. His Father - Kinyaa'aanii - Towering House Clan. His Mother - Todichinii - Bitter Water Clan. His Grandpa - Deeshchii'nii - Start of the Red Streak People. His Grandma - Ta'neeszahnii - Tangle Clan. He attended Mission School until the 8 th grade and then attended Chemawa Indian School until 16 years of age and dropped out. His employment history was mostly in the labor force. He did work for the railroad in several states until he settled down to live in Idaho Falls, where he met his wife, Irene. They met in 1973 and got married in 1981. From there they moved to Fort Hall, Idaho and traveled back and forth to Firth, Idaho for work. His next employment was at Nonpareil Foods in 2001 in Blackfoot, Idaho where he worked until his retirement. His other employment was at Lamb Weston during harvest season. They had no children together, but adopted two grandchildren whom he loved as much as if they were his own, Memory Nakai, and Vandever Wilson. He loved his grandkids and great grandkids very much. Steven made it their households he resided at. He was a strong believer in the Native American Church, and also his Native American traditional ways. Being that he and Irene had no biological children of their own he took in her kids and family as his own, Step-daughters, Loretta and Marley Thompson; step-sons, Alfred, Larry, Harry and Henry Thompson; numerous grand and great children both in Oregon and here in Idaho. He is survived by his grandson, Vandever; granddaughter, Memory; step-daughters, Marley Thompson of Fort Hall, ID, Loretta Thompson of Burns, OR; four step-sons, Alfred Thompson of Burns, OR, Larry Thompson of Phoenix, AZ, Harry and Henry Thompson of Chubbuck, ID; and a sister, Sarah Yazzie of Aztec, NM; and one brother, Calvin Chavez also of Aztec, NM. He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene; four siblings; his mother and father; step-son, Robert Thompson and one great grandson, Elyas San Diego Trevino. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 18, 2018 at 9:30 am at Colonial Funeral Home 2005 S. 4th Ave. Pocatello. Visitation will be from 9-9:30 am. Burial will follow at 11 am in the Falls View Cemetery, American Falls, ID.
