Stephen Lawton Myers

d. August 16, 2014

Stephen Lawton Myers, 67, of Inkom, ID left mortality after wrestling the grizzly bear called "Cancer". Steve was born June 20, 1947 to Lawton and Joan Myers in Las Vegas, Nevada. In his youth he attended 16 schools by the time he graduated from Highland High School in 1965. Afterward, he went to ISU and became activated in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He served a full-time mission to the Northern Indian Mission. While on his mission, the mission president prompted Elder Myers to write to the sister missionary, Gayla Hansen, who served in the mission office. Upon returning, they were married in the Salt Lake Temple on Sept 4, 1970, because she couldn't resist his peanut butter proposal. Steve graduated from ISU in 1972 with a degree in Sociology. He began work as the LDS Indian Area Supervisor from 1972-1975, in Wolf Point, MT. Soon after, they decided they needed to live in a town with at least a grocery store, and moved to the Blackfoot area, where he was a Snake River High School seminary teacher, from 1976-1977. From 1978 to 2014, Steve was co-owner of O'Dell's Furniture in Idaho Falls, Pocatello, Blackfoot, and Rexburg. Steve built a log home in Rigby, ID, (LaBelle area) where he and his wife raised five children. Steve loved the outdoors and landscaping and made every home a fortress from the world. Stephen loved the scriptures. He would tell friends and neighbors of gospel insights around his neighborhood campfires. A good campfire hot dog never hurt anyone, but it came with a price: We had to listen to his stories such as the time he fought a grizzly bear with a pocket knife, the time he became one with a crow nesting on his head, and the poor girl's desk he threw up on in the 5 th grade. His sound effects were much loved by his grandchildren. Steve served five missions, like his grandfather: One full-time, three stake, and one temple mission with his wife. He also served as gospel doctrine teacher, stake high counselor, nursery leader, high priest group leader and primary teacher. He is survived by his wife of almost 44 years, Gayla; daughters Stephanie (Bill) McBride of Pocatello; Alana Bills of Inkom; Rachel (Aaron) McClellan of New Hampshire; son Michael (Melissa) Myers of Pocatello; and daughter Liane (Paul) Pederson of Oregon. He is also survived by brother, John (Diane) Myers of Caldwell, and sisters, Rebecca Myers of IA, and Jan (Mike) Hatmaker of AZ and 17 grandchildren. Family will receive friends on Thursday, August 21, 2014 from 6-8 PM at the Inkom LDS Skyline Ward Building, 150 Snow Peak Blvd. Inkom, ID, and for one hour prior to services at the church on Friday. The funeral service will be Friday, August 22, 2014 at 11 AM. at the Skyline Bldg. Burial will follow in the Inkom Cemetery.
