Stanley Henry Vegors, Jr., 85, of Pocatello, Idaho passed away Tuesday, April 29, 2014 due to complications of old age at a local assisted living center.
Stanley was born on January 5, 1929 in Detroit, Michigan to Stanley Henry Vegors, Sr. and Esther Sharpe Vegors. At age 3, his family moved to Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, where his father had a thriving medical practice. Stanley loved growing up in Michigan. He enjoyed fishing, sailing and skiing as a child.
Stanley graduated from Middlebury College with a B.A. in 1951. He also received a B.S. from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1951. He was Phi Beta Kappa at M.I.T. He received a M.S. in Physics in 1952 and a Ph.D. in Physics in 1955 both from the University of Illinois in Champaign, Illinois.
He and his wife, Ann Hope Starr, married in 1951. They were happily married for 63 years. He worked at Idaho State University for many years and was head of the Physics Department from 1958-1965. From 1982 to 1984 he worked at the University of Petroleum and Minerals in Saudi Arabia. He published many articles in the fields of solar energy, nuclear safeguards and nuclear waste disposal.
He very much enjoyed the outdoor activities available in Idaho. He loved sailing and skiing. He was also an avid reader.
He is survived by: his wife, Ann Hope Vegors of Pocatello; his daughter, Heidi Ann Vegors of Pocatello; his son, Eric Starr Vegors of Seattle, WA; grandchildren, Chris, Stanley Michael, Victoria and Paul Vegors of Seattle, WA; and great-grandchildren, Sarah, Christian and Christianna Vegors also of Seattle, WA.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 13, 2014 at the United Methodist Church on 200 North 15th Avenue, with Reverend Craig Strobel officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Wilks Funeral Home 211 W. Chubbuck Road.
The family requests in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to either the Nature Conservancy or to the Salvation Army.
