Sherrel Ray Wells

March 3, 1948 — September 11, 2020

Sherrel Ray Wells, passed away on the morning of September 11, 2020 at the age of 72 in Pocatello, Idaho. He was surrounded by his family when he passed. Sherrel was born in Pocatello at the St. Anthony's Hospital on March 3, 1948. He grew up in Pocatello and graduated from Pocatello High School in 1966.

As a young man, Sherrel worked as a beer truck driver and a bouncer at a local bar, and raced snow machines on the side. In his early 30's Sherrel began working for the Union Pacific Railroad Company out of Pocatello. He had a lifelong love of trains and made friendships that lasted a lifetime while working for the railroad. At 6 feet 8 inches tall, it is quite possible that Sherrel Wells was the tallest railroader in UPR history. Sherrel retired from Union Pacific after 31 years.

In his leisure time, Sherrel enjoyed boating, hunting, golfing, camping, fishing, ISU football games, coin-collecting, stamp-collecting, NASCAR, and fast cars. But most important, Sherrel loved his friends and family. Sherrel never missed a family dinner, birthday party, graduation or wedding. This past year Sherrel was able to make a final trip to Mackay, Idaho which was his favorite place to be after he retired. During his final visit, Sherrel was able to camp, fish and see many of his beloved family members one more time. As a final farewell, Sherrel built and installed 3 homemade birdhouses that are located along the Mackay Golf Course. He will be remembered for the wonderful man that he was and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Sherrel is survived by his son Jeremy Wells (wife Sherrie and grandchildren James and Stephanie), son Jason Wells (Myndee Wells, grandchildren Brooke, Ali, and Chance), Casey Wells (wife Connie Wells, grandchildren Raj, Brody and Grady). In intimate graveside service will be held for the family on October 17, 2020 at 12:00 p.m. Following the service , a Celebration of Life will take place at Portneuf Valley Brewery for family and friends from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm.
