Samuel "Sam" Otero

October 16, 1944 — March 12, 2024

Samuel Feliciano Otero, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away on March 12, 2024. He was born on October 16, 1944, in Las Vegas, New Mexico, he grew up in Denver, Colorado, and later moved to Pocatello, Idaho.

Sam's life was filled with love for his family and a passion for tinkering. He found joy in restoring and showcasing antique cars, a true "car guy" through and through. He was also a skilled woodworker and always eager to lend a helping hand (or his opinion!) with any project.

In 1962, Sam married the love of his life, Wanda Otero. Together, they raised four beautiful daughters, Roxanna (Mickey) Larreau, Tamara (Corey) Buck, Rose (Bill) Stilson, and Tonia (Joel) Johnson. His greatest pride came from his ever-growing family, which eventually included 14 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Sam cherished spending time with his grandkids, never missing a chance to hold a new baby or attend an event to cheer them on. They, in turn, loved his playful teasing and the special nicknames he had for many of them.

Sam was known for his meticulous nature, unwavering determination, and quick wit. His legendary mustache and one-liners could bring a smile to anyone's face. He brought his family many simple joys such as his homemade salsa or “strong sauce” as we called it, his ability to peel an orange while keeping the peel in one piece and saving unique collection such as $2 bills, antiques, and bells.

In nearly 25 years of retirement from JR Simplot, Sam remained active and was always willing to help his daughters and grandchildren in any way he could. Even in his final months, his independence and strength shined through as he insisted on chopping firewood and tackling projects all on his own.

Sam was a pillar of strength and a source of wisdom for his family. He was a protector, a shoulder to cry on, and a constant presence for his wife Wanda for 62 years. Though not a saint, he was honest, hardworking, and above all, loving.

Commonly known as Grandpa Sam to all who met him, he is already deeply missed. We know he is resting now, and we will cherish his memory forever, holding our heads strong with the small bit of stubbornness he passed on to each of us. Until we meet again,

Vaya Con Dios.

With respect to his wishes, no services will be held at this time.
