Royal Christen Slotten, 89, longtime Twin Falls resident, passed away peacefully July 7, 2016 in Pocatello.
Roy was born June 3rd, 1927 in Wausau, Wisconsin to Christen and Petra Haines Slotten, both strong Norwegian descents. He was raised in a dairy farm near Wittenberg, Wisconsin. Roy, along with his brother Ken became lifelong baseball enthusiast. As one of the last draftees during WWII, Roy served in the U.S. Army in 1945 and was mustered out of the service immediately after the war. Roy played baseball at the University of Wisconsin on a G.I. scholarship with a bachelor's degree in journalism. After graduating he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and was stationed as a Staff Sergeant in Miho, Japan where he played and coached baseball.
Roy married Marjorie E. Hacker on September 15, 1956 in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. They would have been married for 60 years this September. They moved to Twin Falls, Idaho in August 1958. Roy started work at the Times News as a copy editor. Their first child Renee was born in 1961. Roy then began work in 1961 as an employment counselor for the Twin Falls, Idaho Department of Labor. Their second child David was born in August 1965. Roy retired after 25 years. He continued as an employment counselor in his private practice called "The Listening Post".
Roy shared his love of baseball with many in Twin Falls. Foremost, his son David who is a High School Baseball coach. Roy made great effort in coaching kids and seeing that they had access to baseball. He also served 10 years as the Idaho State Secretary of the American Legion Baseball Association.
Roy's love of baseball was matched by his love of travel. He traveled extensively with friends to Argentina, Patagonia, Chile, Brazil, and Norway. He and Marge traveled to France, Spain and Mexico. Their favorite annual destination was Yachats, Oregon.
Roy was a loving and patient father and grandpa. He taught his children the value of hard work. He taught his children and grandchildren to ski and fish. Roy sat through countless games and sporting events. He held many back yard campouts and popcorn eating contests and nobody loved ice cream more than Roy. He was a masterful crepe maker and everyone was welcome even if there weren't any crepes left for him.
Roy enjoyed home carpentry and building, always working on a project. Civic involvement was a top priority for Roy. He was a member of the Toastmasters all his life and was elected District Governor 15. In 1970, he was elected President of Twill Falls Community Action Agency Board, and in 1992 was elected as Democratic Precinct Committeeman. Roy was also an early officer of Twin Falls Mental Health Association.
We would like to send a special thanks to those at Copper Summit Assisted Living in Pocatello who cared for Roy the last 18 months of his life. In lieu of flowers, please send memorial donations to:

Roy was preceded in death by his parents Christen and Petra Slotten and his brother and sister-in-law Ken and Dorothy Slotten.
Roy's attitude toward life can perhaps best be summarized by words he spoke in a Toastmasters speech when he attributed three main lessons he learned from Jesus Christ: Honesty, Love and forgiveness.
