Roy Marvin Sutcliffe, 84, went home to be with the Lord November 29, 2017, following a courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by loved ones, in the comfort of his home. Roy was born on September 1, 1933 in Rupert, Idaho to Philip and Ella Sutcliffe. His family moved 13 times before settling in Pocatello in 1941. He graduated from Pocatello High School in 1951, and promptly joined the Air Force, serving during the Korean War. He was stationed in Charleston, W.Va. (where he met the love of his life, Francine), Thule, Greenland, and St. Croix Falls, WI. Following an honorary discharge, Roy began his career as an instructor in the Idaho State University Vo-Tech Electronics Program. While teaching, he attended classes at Idaho State University and Colorado State University, graduating with a degree in Technical Education. Roy also ran a TV repair business for 15 years while teaching at ISU. He retired from ISU in 1989. Roy met Francine Young at Emmanuel Baptist church in Charleston, West Virginia. They were married on December 5, 1953, exactly one year after their first date. Roy said he didnt think there was even a proposal, as they just knew they were meant to be together. From this union Roy and Francine were blessed with two daughters, Susan and Carolyn. Roy loved to travel, so much so that he and Francine drove to West Virginia 68 times and made road trips to many other places as well. They also loved to camp, and after he retired, they spent many summers as camp hosts at the Sockeye Campground in Redfish Lake, ID. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed hiking, golfing, biking, and cross-country skiing. When he wasnt doing those things, you could find him doing a crossword puzzle, reading, writing, taking pictures, or simply spending time with family. He thoroughly loved ISU athletics, especially womens basketball. He loved his country fiercely and always stayed informed of current events. Roy is survived by his wife of 64 years, Francine Young Sutcliffe, Pocatello; daughters, Susan (Brett) Grayson, Pocatello, and Carolyn (Al) Goetz, Hastings, Nebraska; sister, Marjorie (Delwin) Farnsworth, Pocatello; 6 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren, with another on the way! He was preceded in death by his parents, Phil and Ella Sutcliffe. A celebration of Roys life will be held in July of 2018, followed by an epic camping trip near Redfish Lake. The family would like to thank Marian, Sheila, Annetta, and additional staff at Heritage Home Health and Hospice for their exceptional care and compassion during Roys last months. The family would also like to thank the staff at Ed Snells Pharmacy and Portneuf Medical Center.
