He was born January 1, 1925 at East McDowell, Kentucky to Willy Brown and Lena Vance Brown. Hoss grew up in the Hills of Kentucky. During this era times were tough and all worked very hard to survive. The family survived selling Boot leg moon shine, yields from a family garden and milk cows. Beans, corn, pork and a milk cow provided food for the family of 9 children and their parents.

During these 32 years of hard work Hoss and Bertha touched many people's lives with their generosity and kindness to their customers. They also made several life long friendships.
