He was born January 1, 1925 at East McDowell, Kentucky to Willie Brown and Lena Vance Brown. Hoss grew up in the Hills of Kentucky. During this era times were tough and all worked very hard to survive. The family survived selling Boot leg moon shine, yields from a family garden and milk cows. Beans, corn, pork and a milk cow provided food for the family of 9 children and their parents.

On May 29, 1943 he was wounded in Anzio Italy. For this he received a purple heart and was considered a Disabled Veteran. After 9 months in the hospital in Louisville, Kentucky he returned home to Eastern Kentucky. On March 5, 1949 he married Bertha Whitaker. In 1954 he brought his wife and 4 children to the Tyhee area. He purchased a small gas station and store that he owned and operated for 32 years. In 1986 Hoss and his wife Bertha sold the store and retired. During these 32 years of hard work Hoss and Bertha touched many people's lives with their generosity and kindness to their customers. They also made several life long friendships.

During the early years Hoss had a small cattle operation. As one of his favorite hobbies, this provided fresh beef every year and sometimes a little money in return.
