POCATELLO-Robert Loren (Bob) Engel, 85, died on Monday, October 1, 2012 at his home in Pocatello, Idaho of cancer. Bob was born in Chicago, Illinois on June 13, 1927, to Julius and Marian Engel. Bob attended DeWitt Clinton grammar school and Von Steuben High School in Chicago, joining the Army in 1945. He served as an MP in the Manhattan Project-Las Alamos, New Mexico, in Patton's Third Army, at Nurnberg, Germany during the War Crimes Trials, and Camp Stoneman, California, returning to civilian life after 43 months. While in service, he completed high school via USAFI, and upon discharge attended Northern Illinois State Teachers College (later University) at DeKalb, later transferring to Roosevelt College (later University) in Chicago, where he graduated with a BA in English. After graduation from Roosevelt in 1952, he married Miriam Aranow. Three children were born from this marriage. They were later divorced. His second marriage in 1963 also ended in divorce. He was variously employed as advertising catalog copywriter, copy chief, account service manager and account executive until 1963, when he opened and operated his own advertising agency in Chicago until 1974. Moving to Colorado in 1975, he met and married the love of his life, Carol Ann Kartchner, in 1976. They lived in Bayfield, Colorado, where he opened a gift shop/sporting goods/gun shop, He served on the Sanitation Board, Town Board, and as mayor pro tem of Bayfield, Colorado. Bob closed his gun shop and they moved to Durango, Colorado where he was in charge of Security for King Coal Mine at Hesperus, Colorado for several years before their move to Arizona where Bob returned to advertising for three years. They finally settled in Pocatello, Idaho in 1990, where Bob worked for several years as a security guard at Kraft and Ore-Ida, later becoming known locally as the owner of Bob's Guns, after which he eventually retired. After retirement, he and his wife Carol became involved in the antique business, traveling to various antique shows and later renting booth space in several Pocatello, ID, shops. Bob's lifelong interests, in addition to firearms and antiques, were fishing, politics and reading (alternating between fiction and non-fiction, and often he had 2 or 3 books going at one time). He was an avid student of History all his life. He had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed spending time with his friends and family laughing and joking. He loved to travel and his travels included 49 states (Hawaii 4 times), Canada, Mexico, Germany, Bahamas (3 times), Jamaica (8 times). He is survived by his wife, Carol, his brother, Alan (Sondy) Engel of Glenview, IL, his cousin, Bill (Joy) Engel of St. Louis, MO, children, Eric Engel of St. Louis, MO, Todd (Judy) Engel of Muskego, WI, and Julie Ann Engel, (Chaplain) Major Allen (Penny) Staley, U.S. Army currently serving in Italy, and Randy (Darla) Staley of Oklahoma City, OK, grandchildren, Courtney Engel of St. Louis, Zachary Staley and Nathan (Melissa) Staley of Kansas City, MO, Philip and Jason Staley, currently of Italy, Kirk, Rhonda, Rachel and Timothy Staley all of Oklahoma City, OK. Services for Robert Engel will be held Friday, October 5, 2012 at 12:00 P.M. at Colonial Funeral Home, 2005 S. Fourth Avenue, Pocatello, Idaho. There will be a visitation held from 11:00 .M. to Noon just prior to services. Burial with full military rites will follow at Fielding Memorial Cemetery in Idaho Falls, Idaho. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Bob's name to Encompass Home Health and Hospice, 4425 Burley Drive, Suite C, Chubbuck, Idaho, 83202. The family would like to take this opportunity to thank all the special angels at Encompass who have made this difficult time easier to bear - especially Toni, Courtney, Miranda, Kirk, Kara, Kelly, Claudette and Farah.
