Richard Warren Kerruish

June 16, 1929 — October 31, 2012

Richard “Dick” Warren Kerruish, 83 years old, passed on the early morning of October 31, 2012 with family beside him. He was born on June 16, 1929 the son of John Franklin “Jack” Kerruish and Thelma Genevieve Croft Kerruish at The Dalles, Oregon.

While a student at Idaho State College (University) he met Lorraine Aslett. They were married February 9, 1952. To this union three children were born: Susan Louise (Mark) Richards, Ogden, UT; David Richard (Venessa) Kerruish, Winston, OR; and Deborah Lynn (Mark) Stengel of Pocatello, Idaho.

Mostly educated in Idaho his first job was as a reporter for the Post Register newspaper of Idaho Falls, Idaho. From there he worked for the Herald Bulletin at Burley, Idaho, then for the North Side News at Jerome, Idaho. The latter newspapers, won several awards with his by-line.

In 1962 the Kerruish family moved to Roseburg, Oregon. Dick started employment as a reporter but became managing editor. While serving as editor of the daily newspaper, The News Review, won many newspaper awards for excellence.

1975 was a time of transition. Dick and his wife and daughter moved to Arco, Idaho where they bought a vintage motel. In 1979 the Kerruishes bought property in downtown Pocatello where they owned and operated The Used Store on Main Street. The business was sold in 2009.

During his lifetime he worked to bring a college to Douglas County of Oregon. That successful attempt helped bring Umpqua Community College to the Roseburg area. He served on many community committees as a member of Kiwanis Club.

He deeply loved his family, fishing and hiking in the magnificent mountains, and his work. Dick was a member of the Highland 9th Ward of the LDS Church. Since registering at Idaho State College in 1949 he has been a continuous supporter of the ISU Bengals.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Lorraine, his children and spouses, 11 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
