Ray Norton

POCATELLO-On Tuesday, November 23, 2010 Ray B. Norton was called home to his Heavenly Father. Ray was born in Zurich, Montana on March 30, 1929 to Henry and LaVinia (Hurst) Norton. He was the sixth of eight children. At the age of 6, he and his family moved to Declo, Idaho and he resided there until graduating high school in 1947. On April 26, 1948 he married his high school sweetheart, Dorothy Worthington. He then served four years in the U.S. Army serving in the Korean Conflict. They lived a short time in Blackfoot, where he worked as a mechanic for Cardon Motors then in 1954 made Pocatello their home, where he attended ISU and studied Mechanical Engineering. Ray worked for Park Price Motor and then later for the State Highway Department, while serving in the Army National Guard and running a small janitorial business with his wife. In 1983, Ray started his own carpet cleaning business known as "Ray Norton Carpet Cleaning," which he and his wife owned until 2007, when they sold to R.B. Long his son- in- law. Ray was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints serving in many positions including Scoutmaster, Cubmaster, Elders Quorum, and finally as the Executive Secretary of the 18 th ward. He was a High Priest. He was active in Scouts and in 1988, he was awarded the Silver Beaver. He also retired from the U.S. Army National Guard, after serving 27 years. He enjoyed old movies, music from the big band era, doing puzzles, reading, and traveling. He also loved being of service to people and sharing his sense of humor. He loved the gospel, he loved the scriptures and going to the temple. He was a member of the Lions club and served as President and tail twister. Ray and his wife have six children; Duane Norton of Pocatello, Idaho, Dan (Karen) Norton of Florence, Oregon, Brian (Jerri) Norton of Elko, Nevada, LaRae (R.B.) Long of Pocatello, Idaho, Janet (Isaac) Heiner of Pocatello, Idaho, and Julie (Chad) Marlow of Blackfoot, Idaho. He also has 26 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Funeral services for Ray will be held Tuesday, November 30 , 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the LDS Pocatello West Stake Center located at, 3337 Hawthorne Road. A viewing will be held Monday, November 29, 2010 at the Colonial Funeral Home, 2005 South 4th Avenue from 6:00-8:00 p.m.. Interment will be in the Mt. View Cemetery with military rites being conducted by the Pocatello Veterans Honor Guard.
