Ralph E. Johns

d. January 11, 2017

Ralph E. Johns, 81, of Pocatello, Idaho passed away on January 11, 2017 in Missoula, Montana. He was born on June 7, 1935 in Weiser, ID to Gearld and Lola Johns. He was the youngest of 4 children and the only son. As a young child he lived in Cambridge, Idaho. Then his family moved to Midvale, Idaho where he attended second through eighth grade at Shoepeg school. He went to Midvale High School where he graduated in 1953. Soon after graduation, he married Eileen Qualls on September 13, 1953. They had 3 daughters and 2 sons. Then, on November 23, 1966 Ralph married Ann Hammond who had 2 daughters and 1 son. Ralph and Ann later had 1 daughter together for a combined family of 9 children. He grew up on farms and learned the value of hard work early in life. He harvested grain crops, baled hay and milked cows. To support his growing family, he worked a variety of jobs including: his own milk delivery service, farming crops, caring for livestock and surveying wheat fields. He also worked at a saw mill, an applesauce cannery, a mobile home factory and an appliance shop. In 1962 Ralph moved to Pocatello, Idaho where he lived for the majority of his life. When he moved to Pocatello, he began working at the J.R. Simplot Co. Don Plant. He held several positions there and while working as an operator in the ammonia plant he started training to become an electrician. He then worked for Simplot as an electrician until he retired in June of 2000. He loved being an electrician and in his spare time he ran his own side-business called Johns Electric. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He held many callings over the years, but really enjoyed serving as the Executive Secretary and the Membership Clerk. Ralph enjoyed woodworking and spending time in his shop. He designed and built several projects over the years for his children and grandchildren. He liked to fix things and spent a lot of time working on projects around the house, as well as assisting his children with their projects. He never turned down an opportunity for pie and ice cream, and after retirement, he always looked forward to a good afternoon nap! Ralph is survived by his wife, Ann Johns; daughters, Carol Yokoda, Janice (Jay) Arnold, Bonnie Upshaw, Barbara (Jason) Franzen, Susan (Don) Lakey, and Becky (Vashon) Kirkman; sons, Vernon (Barbara) Johns, Gearld (Claudia) Johns, and Kent (Cora) Johns; 23 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren; and his sister, Gearldine Johns.
