R. Dean Livingstone, 86, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, July 29, 2014. Dean was born in Pocatello on February 4, 1928, to Bill and Marie (Dodson) Livingstone. In the late 1930s, the family moved to Aberdeen, Idaho, where his father had purchased a farm. He moved back to Pocatello in 1945, spending the last semester and graduating from Pocatello High School in 1946. At the age of 16, he became the youngest licensed pilot in Idaho. He continued to fly until his marriage to Marilyn. Dean joined the US Navy becoming an Air Control Tower Operator stationed in the Philippines and Kaneohe in Hawaii. After his honorable discharge in 1948, he went to work for the Union Pacific Railroad, retiring after 43 years. While attending Idaho State College, he met his life companion, Marilyn Kunkel. They were married July 2, 1950, and had just celebrated their 64 th anniversary. In his early years, he golfed, hunted, and fished. However, bowling was his life. He started in bowling in 1939 as a pin setter at King Pin Lanes in Pocatello. He became a serious bowler in 1955. In 1964, he went to his first ABC National Tournament and participated in more than 30 tournaments, until 2009. In 1995 he became director of the Senior International Scratch Bowling Association, a tournament hosting some of the best bowlers over 45 years of age. His innovations built the membership from 25 members to over 200 members. He was honored for his accomplishments by being inducted into the Pocatello Bowling Hall of Fame in 2003. Dean is survived by his wife of 64 years, Marilyn, Pocatello; daughters , Pat (Vic ) Verhoff Idaho Falls, ID, Susan (Dave) Easley, Priest River, ID, son, Scott (Keli Davis) Livingstone, Pocatello, ID, and daughter, Pam Livingstone, Pocatello, ID. He is also survived by two granddaughters, Annette (Chris Davis) Verhoff, Marietta, Georgia, and Nikki (Tim Warren) Verhoff, Summit, New Jersey, as well as two grandsons, Robert (Robbie) Easley, and Allen Easley both of Priest River, ID. A gathering for family and friends will be held on Friday evening, August 1, 2014 from 7 to 9 PM at Colonial Funeral Home, 2005 S. 4 th Ave. Pocatello, ID 208-233-1500. A celebration of his life will be held at his favorite location, Tough Guy Lanes, 403 East Lewis, Pocatello, 233-2930, on Saturday, August 2, 2014 from 1 to 4 p.m. Condolences can be made to the family online at www.colonial-funeralhome.com
