Philip Lynn Howell

July 11, 1954 — February 7, 2022

Philip Lynn Howell, 67, passed away peacefully at home on February 7, 2022. Phil was born on July 11, 1954 in Pocatello, ID to E. Reed Howell and Rose Mary Crump Howell. He was the third of five children. Phil attended Pocatello Schools and graduated from Highland High School. Phil was active in band, football, and ROTC throughout his school years. He entered the United States Army in January, 1975, and due to a knee injury was honorably discharged in April, 1975.

In October, 1976 he went on his first date with the love of his life, Shirley Anne Dennis. They were married on January 24, 1977, and just celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary. They brought several children to their union. Phil loved his family very much.

He enjoyed camping and fishing. He also enjoyed playing cards with his parents and his siblings. Pinochle and cribbage were two of his favorite games. Phil was always fascinated and enamored with trains. He spent countless hours at the train yards watching trains come and go. His favorite trains were steam engines. Phil spent a good deal of the time chasing steam engines to get pictures. His other passion was photography, and there wasn’t much else better than taking pictures of steam engines.

Phil was a traveler. He became a truck driver so he could see the country. He eventually owned his own trucks. He found ways to go to Texas several times so he could visit his brother, Lowell, and sister-in-law Glenda.

Phil was an active Elder in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He looked forward to baptizing his grandchildren. Phil loved life and was a fighter. He beat stage 4 cancer and had been cancer free for the past 3 years.

Phil is survived by his wife, Shirley, his children, Annie (Collin), Pamela (Nate), P.J., Christopher, Nicholas (Brittany), Robert (Ashley), Leslie (William), and Taralynn (Kade). Phil is also survived by his brother, Lowell (Glenda), sister, Linda (Guy), and brother, Douglas (Cheryl). He leaves behind 20 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews, and his fur buddy Titan.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Reed and Rose, a brother, Steven, his parents-in-law, and two brothers-in-law.
