Captain Clair J. "Pete" Schrodt, USN (Ret) passed away March 4, 2012, at Portneuf Medical Center in Pocatello, Idaho, after losing a long battle with lung cancer. Pete was born November 2, 1938, in Walnut Grove Township, Illinois to Clarence L. Schrodt and Mary Edna Grace Stuckey Schrodt. He graduated from Industry High School in Industry, Illinois, in June 1956 and enlisted in the US Navy September 13, 1956. He married Dorothy Brower Cutler in Pocatello, Idaho, January 1960. His enlisted service includes duty aboard USS Sheldrake (AGS-19); Nuclear Power School at the Naval Reactor Testing (A1W) site in Idaho Falls, Idaho; and Reactor Plant Operator on the commissioning crew of USS Enterprise (CVN-65). He was selected for the Naval Enlisted Scientist Education Program (NESEP) and earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Nebraska in 1965. He was promoted to Chief Petty Officer while attending the University of Nebraska. He was also admitted to Eta Kappa Nu Association and Sigma Tau, honorary fraternities for electrical engineers and all engineers respectively. Pete attended Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island, and was commissioned Ensign in October 1965. Commissioned service as an unrestricted line officer (1100) includes Electronics Material and Anti-Submarine Warfare Officer aboard USS Goodrich (DDR-831); Officer-in-charge of Swift Boat (PCF-9), Swift Squadron 1, Coastal Division 11, An Thoi Province, Vietnam. He reported to the Supervisor of Shipbuilding, 13 th Naval District in Seattle, Washington in January 1969. In April 1969 he was designated Engineering Duty Officer (1400). He served as Resident Supervisor of Shipbuilding, Tacoma. In 1971 he went to Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He graduated in June 1974 with a Master of Science in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering and a professional Ocean Engineer's degree. In 1985 he attended the Executive Development Program at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York. Engineering duty includes: Type Desk Officer for surface ships at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Bremerton, Washington; Repair Officer aboard USS Hector (AOR-7); two tours with the Supervisor of Shipbuilding, Seattlea�"first as Resident Supervisor, Portland, and second as Repair Officer in Seattle; Chief of Naval Operations Maintenance and Policy Programming section at the Pentagon; Planning and Design Officer, Supervisor of Shipbuilding, Jacksonville, Florida; Commanding Officer, Supervisor of Shipbuilding, Brooklyn, New York; Commanding Officer, Supervisor of Shipbuilding, San Francisco. Medals Pete is eligible to wear are Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal with two gold stars for second and third awards, Navy Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal with two bronze stars for second and third awards, National Defense, Vietnam Service, and Vietnam Campaign with 1960s device. He is also eligible to wear the Presidential Unit Citation, Navy Unit Commendation and Sea Service Deployment ribbons. Pete retired July 1, 1992, and he and Dorothy moved to back to Pocatello. Pete earned a Masters in Business Administration from Idaho State University. Pete is survived by his wife Dorothy; two sons, Shane and Jim; three daughters, Debra (Tim) Bronner, Darla (Tim Murphy) Schrodt, Claire (Curtis Lending) Schrodt; and nine grandchildren. Burial with full honors will be at Arlington National Cemetery Thursday, July 12, 2012, at 3 P.M. Condolences may be sent to the family online at www.Colonial-FuneralHome.com.
