Paul Emigh Johnston Jr.

BLACKFOOT Paul E. Johnston Jr., 91, passed from this life to the next on May 6, 2018 at home in Blackfoot, Idaho, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on January 26, 1927 in Sterling, Idaho, the oldest of four children born to Paul E. Johnston Sr. and Sara Elizabeth Gough. Ten days after graduation from high school in 1945, Paul was drafted into the Army. After boot camp he was sent to Munich, Germany and remained there until he was honorably discharged in September, 1946. Paul married Roberta Emogene Hollingback February 18, 1950, in Meridian, Idaho. They celebrated 61 years of marriage until Roberta passed away in 2011. Together they raised four children, Paul III, Mark, Teresa and Kevin. They enjoyed many of the places they have lived including Boise, Idaho for 20 years and Kalispell, Montana for 25 years. The highlight for him was the farm they owned in Kalispell. They have resided in Blackfoot since moving from Boise in 2000. Paul was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings including early morning seminary teacher, working with the youth, temple ordinance worker, Bishop, as well as numerous other callings. He loved teaching. He was a people person and a friend to all, young and old alike. In his later years, he took up the hobby of watercolour painting. He has created many beautiful paintings and cards which he has shared with family and friends. A highlight of this past year for him was his trip to Shenandoah, Virginia for an artists retreat, to further his knowledge and skill in watercolour painting. Many of his paintings have been entered in the fair. He loved to bake bread and he loved to share it with others. He was an avid reader and he enjoyed woodworking. For several years he organized the Blackfoot Extravaganza, a choral program enjoyed by many at Christmas time. He enjoyed volunteering in the fall to help seniors with Medicare enrollment. He will be greatly missed. He is survived by his children, Paul III (Marilyn) Johnston of American Fork, UT, R. Mark (Tami) Johnston of Boise, ID, Teresa (Kevin) Martinsen of Blackfoot, ID, and Kevin (Cathy) Johnston of Auburn, CA; his sisters, Sarabeth Oviatt of Pahrump, NV, and Faris (Larry) Anderson of Kensington, CA; 15 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his spouse, Roberta; his parents; and his brother, Lael. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 19, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Blackfoot 15 th Ward Building at 520 N. Schilling St., Blackfoot, Idaho, 83221, with Bishop Bart Brown officiating. A viewing will be held from 9:30 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church. Interment will follow at the Grove City Cemetery.
