Myrna Rae Lowenthal, 75, passed away peacefully from pneumonia on Tuesday, October 28, 2014 in Fallon, Nevada surrounded by her family. Myrna was born in Pocatello, Idaho on November 20, 1938 to Rufus Harmon and Beatrice Bolingbroke Lawson. She spent the majority of her life in Pocatello attending Jefferson Elementary, Irving Junior High and Pocatello High School, graduating in 1956. Myrna then attended Idaho State College her freshman year, and then attended Graceland College her sophomore year receiving an Associate of Arts Degree. She returned to Idaho State College and obtained a Bachelors Degree in Education with an emphasis in Physical Education and a minor in English in 1960. After graduation, Myrna began her teaching career for Clark County School District in Las Vegas, Nevada. She coached the girls junior high softball team, winning two city championships. While in her first year of teaching, she met her husband David Howard Lowenthal. They were married September 14, 1961 in Las Vegas. While in Las Vegas, they had two daughters, Shonni Ann (1962) and Julee Lynn (1968). In 1973, Myrna and David moved to Pocatello where she began teaching school at Hawthorne Junior High School. In 1975, their third daughter, Marci, was born. Myrna continued to coach. She coached track, gymnastics, and drill team at Hawthorne while also teaching night school and summer school. On one occasion, Myrna was a hero. In 1991, she single handedly disarmed a student who had taken a knife to school and had stabbed another student three times. Myrna retired after teaching a total of 40 years. She loved teaching so much she continued substitute teaching until 2012. Myrna and David celebrated their 50 th Anniversary in 2011 and their 53 rd anniversary last month. Prior to their 50 th anniversary, they moved to Fernley, Nevada. While in retirement, they traveled throughout the United States in their motor home and for their 50 th anniversary they took a cruise to Alaska. Myrna enjoyed spending time with her family, golfing, traveling, and watching her grandchildren participate in their numerous sports activities. It should be noted; Myrna also had two Hole-in-Ones in one summer. Myrna is a very spiritual person and a member of the Community of Christ, holding the Office of Elder. She loved taking her children and grandchildren in her motor home to church reunions at Camp Red Cliff in Utah. Myrna is survived by her husband, David, daughters Shonni Rule (Milton) Idaho Falls, Julee Leavitt (Shane) Moscow, Idaho, and Marci ONeill (Brian) Fernley, Nevada, sister Donna Rounds Pocatello, and 7 grandchildren: Nikolas Rule, Mayci Rule Ayala, Alexi Rule, Baylee Leavitt, Isaac ONeill, Rory Leavitt, and Marli Rae ONeill and a niece, Shelley Maxey, and nephew, Scott Rounds. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Darrel Lawson, and infant sister, Marilyn Lawson, mother and father-in-law, and brother-in-law, Boyd Rounds. Services will be held Thursday, November 6 th at 11:00 am at Colonial Funeral Home, 2005 South 4 th Ave. Pocatello, Idaho, 233-1500. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.
