Michael David Panting

Michael D. Panting, age 69, passed away in Pocatello, ID on August 24, 2021. He was born on December 23, 1951, the third child and only son of Don and Elmus Panting. He was raised on the family farm, graduated from Soda Springs High School and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1978 from Idaho State University.

He loved the great outdoors especially Cariboo Mountain, as quoted by him, “Glaciated scenic wonder in Idaho, a portion of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem located in the Caribou-Targhee Forest.” A true conservationist of our lands and waters; he was a member of several conservation organizations. His greatest conservation accomplishment was in December 1988, after Mike and his uncle Dale Panting worked diligently with The Nature Conservancy for protecting and preserving Formation Springs. The application for the Panting Homestead and water rights of Formation Springs were made in 1887; thusly, the Formation Springs Preserve carries on our family legacy.

Mike’s favorite job was working for the Forest Service after college, receiving many awards and recognitions. During that time, he used his favorite horse, an appaloosa mare, Lucy, to carry supplies into the back country. He had a great love for animals especially his dog, Solomon.

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents Christopher B. Panting, Grace & Martin Ruggles, Belle and Dave Smith. He is survived by sisters Eloise (Bill) Burke of Grace, LaRae Wagner-Howell (Ron Howell) of Pocatello, Lorri (Curt) Lish of Soda Springs and nieces and nephews.

There will be a Memorial Graveside at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, September 20, 2021 at the Fairview Cemetery, 148 S. Main Street, Soda Springs ID, 83276.
