Melba Jacqueline Mccurdy

Melba Jacqueline Simpson McCurdy was born February 10, 1929, in Idaho Falls, Idaho, to Weston and Gladys Simpson. She died April 29, 2019. When she was born she was almost sent home from the hospital with the wrong family. It was only because her mother noticed her wrapped in the wrong blanket that Melba was not switched at birth. Melba was the third of four daughters: Helen, Marcia and Norma. In 1942, the Simpson's moved to Pocatello, living in a small home on South Second Avenue. Melba had many fond memories of friends and family and of her time living there. She graduated from Pocatello High School in 1947, where she served as the school treasurer. She was engaged to J. Dean McCurdy her junior year. Melba married Dean in December 1946. They are the parents of six children: William James, Jack, Maria Elena (David) Dahlquist, Rosalie Kirk, Steven (Karen) and Kevin. They had been married nearly sixty-six years when Dean passed away in October 2012. Melba taught her children to be good people, to treat others well, and to love reading and music. Melba was one of the original members of the Pocatello LDS 12 th Ward and spent most of her life attending that ward. She served in many callings including Den Mother, Relief Society teacher and counselor, homemaking leader, Primary teacher, Beehive advisor and girls camp craft director. For many years she was an active member of the Portneuf Camp of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers. Melba was a homemaker and took care of her family: cooking three meals a day cleaning, sewing, canning, baking bread, packing lunches, painting, wallpapering, making curtains and on a few occasions, reupholstering furniture. When she was 42, she learned to drive. Melba traveled to Utah, Canada, and Japan to help out when grandbabies joined the family and at other times when her help and support was needed, sometimes staying for extended periods of time. She also made a memorable trip to Cancun, Mexico, with her beloved sisters when she was 70 years old. Melba worked part-time at Idaho Savings and Loan, the Cottage Health Store, H&R Block and Lavender and Lace. In 1980, she purchased Lavender and Lace and went into business for herself. For nearly 20 years she enjoyed creating beautiful bridal veils and hats. She enjoyed singing, books, movies, jigsaw puzzles, Skipbo, long evening baths, Nutella and ice cream. Melba was preceded in death by her husband, parents, two sisters, and four grandchildren. She is survived by her children, her sister Helen, 14 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Thanks to Encompass Hospice, especially Remmy and Desiree, Norma from Caring Hearts and Janella, good friend and neighbor, all of whom gave her exceptionally loving care. Services will be held on Saturday, May 4, 2019 at 1 pm at the LDS Century Ward, 2271 S. 4 th Avenue. The family will receive friends at Colonial Funeral Home, 2005 S. 4 th Ave. Pocatello, ID, from 6-8 pm on Friday, May 3, 2019 and again one hour prior to the services at the church. Burial will follow at the Basalt Cemetery, Shelley, Idaho.
