Marva Mae Thompson

August 24, 1938 — June 1, 2019

Marva Mae Horrocks Thompson passed away peacefully at home with her family on June 1, 2019 in Pocatello, Idaho. She was born August 24, 1938 in Roosevelt, Utah, the oldest child of Clarence and Ida Horrocks. She was raised on a small farm in Arcadia, Utah where she helped herd and water the cows, weed the large garden, and stomp down the hay at harvest time. When she was seven years old she became a big sister to her brother Evan, whom she loved very much. She attended elementary school in Myton, Utah, riding the school bus for more than hour each way. She then attended Roosevelt Jr. High and Union High School, graduating in 1956. She attended Brigham Young University, graduating in 1963 with a degree in Home Economics and Secondary Education. She taught high school home economics for five years before getting married. She married Philip Thompson on August 29, 1968 in the Salt Lake temple. They moved to Duchesne, Utah in March of 1970 when Philip began working for the Duchesne County School District. They lived in Duchesne for 36 years, raising their two children, Michelle and Gary. Marva later returned to school and received her elementary education certificate and taught first grade at Duchesne Elementary School for fifteen years, retiring in 1999. Phil and Marva have spent the last thirteen years in Pocatello, Idaho close to their daughter and grandchildren. They sorely missed their home and friends in Duchesne. Marva was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- day Saints, and faithfully served in many callings. She was happiest serving children in the Primary. She had a love for family history and the temple. Marva and Phil served as temple ordinance workers in the Vernal, Utah and Idaho Falls, Idaho temples for a total of eleven years. Marva loved gardening flowers and vegetables. She also enjoyed quilting, embroidery, canning, and she loved to read. She was a wonderful grandmother, always eager to make cookies with her grandchildren and read them books. She loved spending time with them. She was dearly loved by her husband, children, and grandchildren. The family would like to express gratitude to Encompass Home Health and Hospice and Home Helpers for their loving care of Marva in her final days. She is survived by her husband, Philip Thompson of Pocatello, Idaho; daughter Michelle (Michael) Summers, of Pocatello, Idaho; son Gary (Kristina) Thompson of Layton, Utah; grandchildren Kate (Hunter) Nilson and great-grandson Oliver, Draper, Utah; Steven (Taylor) Summers, Logan, Utah; Sister Rachel Summers, Carlsbad California Mission; grandsons Evan and Sam Thompson, Layton, Utah. She is preceded in death by her parents; brother Evan Horrocks; and grandson Matthew Summers. A viewing will be held in Pocatello at Colonial Funeral Home, 2005 S. 4th Ave. on Wednesday, June 5, 2019 from 6-8 pm. There will also be a viewing in Duchesne, Utah at the LDS Duchesne Stake Center on Friday, June 7, 2019 from 12-1:00 pm with the funeral service immediately following starting at 1:00 pm. Burial will be in the Altamont Cemetery, Altamont, Utah.
