Marjorie Louise Barnes Carter, 92, of Pocatello, passed away in her home from natural causes on February 1, 2022.
Marjorie was born August 6, 1929 in Jackson, Idaho to Herschel and Katherine Clark Barnes. She grew up on a small farm in Rupert, Idaho with her older brother, Herschel, and her younger sister, Katherine.
Marjorie was always drawn to the outdoors and preferred doing any farm chores – milking cows, hoeing weeds, baling hay – rather than being stuck inside doing housework. She loved doing things like playing sports, riding horses, and swimming in the canal, which led her to earn her bachelor’s degree from BYU in Physical Education, Health, and Recreation. (She is very proud of winning 1st place in the pogo stick jumping competition.)
While at BYU she fell in love with a cute guy from Burley, Idaho, Ray Livingston Carter. After waiting for Ray to return from his two-year LDS mission, they were married on July 25, 1951 in the Idaho Falls Temple. Then she waited another two years while Ray served in the Army during the Korean War. While waiting, she taught school in Rupert.
They lived in Provo, Utah and Santa Monica, California before settling down in Pocatello, Idaho where they lived for the next 62 years. They have six children – Steven, Linda, Mark, Susan, Virginia, and Gaylynn. Marjorie loved being a wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother and was good at it. She prayed fervently for every one of them daily.
Marjorie loved to serve people, especially those who had struggles. It made her day to make someone else’s day. She shared her beautiful singing talent often with others. Marjorie cherished her membership in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served faithfully in many callings. She often volunteered in the community.
In her late 30’s, Marjorie was afflicted with a bad case of food poisoning which left her crippled with painful arthritis the rest of her life. With her determined and positive attitude she was able to overcome the pain enough to accomplish many things and be a blessing to many people.
Marjorie will be dearly missed by son, Steven Carter (Pam); daughter, Linda Myrup (Alan); son, Mark Carter (Allison); daughter, Susan Christensen (Milt); daughter, Gaylynn Spackman (Ross); sister-in-law, Marge Barnes Butler, 23 grandchildren, and 54 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by husband, Ray; infant daughter, Virginia; parents Herschel and Katherine Clark Barnes; brother, Herschel Barnes; and sister, Katherine Barnes Cannon.
The family extends a special thank you to Victoria, her Visiting Angel, for many hours of companionship and to Symbii Home Health and Hospice for their service in her last few days of life.
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, February 9, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel at 4010 Hawthorne Road, Pocatello, Idaho. There will be a viewing beginning at 10:00 a.m. at the church just prior to the service.
Memories and condolences may be shared with the family under the “Tribute Wall” tab above.
