Mary Petrea (Trea) Goold passed peacefully with her family by her side on March 23, 2015 from injuries she suffered due to a fall in her home. Her journey began in Ashton, Idaho on January 10, 1935. Her father, an immigrant from Denmark, Neils Knudsen, was a merchant and one time mayor of Ashton. Her mother, Wilma Knudsen, was an elementary school teacher. The family moved to Caldwell, Idaho when Trea was in 6th grade and she graduated from high school in 1953. While in high school she sang in choir, played GAA basketball, learned to sew and play piano. She was a fun loving teen who liked nice clothes and worked hard in the Five and Dime store and babysat to pay for them. In the fall of 1953 she enrolled in early childhood education at the University of Idaho. She enjoyed college life as a member of Alpha Chi Omega Sorority and seldom missed the Vandals football and basketball games. In 1956 she had a date with the 67" basketball player, Bob Goold. They were inseparable and when Bob was offered a scholarship to Southern Mississippi that would include books and tuition for Trea, he proposed and, to her parents chagrin, she accepted. The couple was then married in Caldwell in September of 1956, and their honeymoon was the 2000 mile trip to Hattiesburg. After graduating, the couple and their two infants moved to Kimberly Idaho. Trea became a first grade teacher in Twin Falls. During this time she gave birth to a third child. They came to Pocatello in 1965. Her first position was teaching first grade at Bonneville Elementary, and in 1972 she was made the director of Follow Through. She was always a popular teacher and administrator because of her competence and obvious love for children. Despite the responsibilities of her employment, Trea made the time to be a terrific mother and wife. She took time to make clothing for her tall, and hard to fit family. She hated the dirt and cold of camping, but endured it for them. She followed their school activities and insisted they study hard and be good citizens. She was proud that all of her children were honor students. After 30 years of school employment she was ready for retirement. For the past 24 years she and her husband traveled, read hundreds of books, played golf, dined with friends, and had a quality life together. For the past few years, Trea suffered severe osteoporosis. This would be a factor in her death. Trea was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Helen Von Dach; brothers, Robin and Peter Knudsen. She is survived by her husband, Bob; son, Scott (AnnMarie) Goold, Albuquerque, NM, Kari (Larry, deceased) Wheaton, Meridian, ID, Dianne (Marc) Ferguson, Austin, TX; grandchildren, Brittany Ferguson, Ashleigh (Nelson) Rudolph, Jennifer (Tony) Lowe, Andrew Wheaton; great-grandchildren, Cadence and Cohen Lowe. She also leaves behind her beloved dog, Mocha. There will be no formal service for Trea, at her request. She has been cremated and the family will celebrate her life at a special place in Idaho that she loved so much. If you wish to honor Trea, please do something nice for a child, especially a child with special needs. Condolences can be made to the family online at www.colonial-funeralhome.com
