Lavoy Myers

LaVoy Vee Riley Myers, 70, was the daughter of Oscar A. Riley Jr. and Reta Bowman. She was born on December 3, 1944 in American Falls, Idaho and passed away in Pocatello, Idaho on September 25, 2015 surrounded by her family, after a trying battle fighting cancer. She spent her early childhood years at her grandparents farm in the Grand View area of Sterling, Idaho, and often talked fondly of her grandfather farming with horses. The rest of her life she lived in Pocatello. "A life is not important except for the impact it has on other lives" Jackie Robinson. LaVoy had an enormous impact on the lives of her husband, children, students, colleagues, and friends. She was educated in the Pocatello School System attending Jefferson Elementary, Irving Jr. High, and graduated with the Pocatello High School Class of 1963, the last class from the sole high school in Pocatello. She earned a bachelor and master degree from Idaho State University (ISU). After graduating from ISU in 1967, she taught Consumer Family Science for 33 years at Pocatello High School until her retirement, she often said she felt like she never left Poky. She was a devoted teacher, a strong child advocate, teaching her students subject matter while showing compassion and love for them as individuals. She served as the advisor to PHS Indianettes Drill Team, and created the teams Traditional Drill and had a positive lasting influence on many young lives. Many of her former students send her Christmas cards and contact her when returning to Pocatello for their class reunions. She set high expectations for herself, her students, and for her three children. Her children are all graduates of Pocatello High School and Idaho State University. LaVoy met her lifelong companion and love, Robert (Bob) W. Myers, while attending elementary school, but didnt start dating until their senior year in high school when she asked him to the Coed Dance. During high school and college they both worked at Okay Food Center, she as the bakery girl, and he the night manager. It was at this time their inseparable lifelong romance sparked, they married June 30, 1967 after she graduated from ISU. LaVoy was an excellent Baton Twirler. During her senior year of high school she was solo twirler for the Pocatello High School Marching Band and led them when they performed in the 1963 New Years Rose Bowl Parade. While attending ISU she was the Solo Twirler for the ISU Marching Band, and was known as "ISUs Golden Girl" because of the golden sequined uniform she wore while performing at parades and football halftimes. While attending ISU she was active in Home Economics Club, Womens Pikettes, and was selected as the 1965 Playmate of the Year by members of the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity. As a young girl through her high school years, she was an active member of Girl Scouts, and she fondly remembered her many scouting friends, camping at Camp Tendoy, and riding the train to attend the National Girl Scout Round-Up in Vermont. She was exceptionally talented; LaVoy filled her time making ceramic dolls, quilts, sewing, and stitching projects, winning many awards for her fine work. Meeting with her "stitchery friends" twice a month to stitch was a source of enjoyment as was going to the swimming pool every morning to exercise. She loved decorating her home, family events and holidays, working in her flowers, feeding and watching birds, reading novels, doing Sudoko puzzles. She also enjoyed spending time at her Island Park summer retreat, taking RV camping trips with friends, playing the car radio, and working on her PHS Class Reunions. LaVoy was an accomplished downhill skier; she enjoyed riding her ATV, and watching ISUs Girls Basketball. She liked traveling with her husband; they have been to Hawaii, China, Canada, Mexico, Europe, and a Panama Canal Cruise as well as trips to various parts of the United States. Her dogs, most recently Sadie and Ruby, were her buddies. She enjoyed going to dinner every Thursday with long time high school friends and sitting in her driveway enjoying the evenings. She was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa - a past president, Southeast Idaho Retired Educators, Bannock County Historical Society, LDS Church, and a Book Club. She has been recognized by the Idaho Education Association for her teaching excellence, and Zonta International, as a Women of Achievement, and by ISU for her generosity. LaVoys family was her greatest source of pride, accomplishment and love. She greatly enjoyed being a wife, mother and grandmother, guiding, coaching, supporting, and consoling her family when needed. Her granddaughters were a major source of her happiness; she was looking forward to the new arrival. LaVoy set an outstanding example for her family and by her life left a lasting legacy. She is survived by her mother, Reta Riley Alldredge; husband, Robert (Bob) Myers; her children, Holli (Brian) Fuller and granddaughters Lauryn and Emmery of Coeur d Alene, ID; Melissa (Justin) Carvitto and granddaughters Avi and Luca of Leavenworth, Washington; Benjamin (Dawn) Myers and new grandbaby on the way, of Pocatello, and sister Robin Neff (Charles) Stillwell, OK. She was preceded in death by her father, Oscar A. Riley Jr. and brother, Charles (Chuck) Riley. The family will meet with friends Thursday, October 1, from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Colonial Funeral Home, 2005 S. 4 th Ave. Pocatello, ID. 83201, 208-233-1500. The family will meet again with friends from 1:30 to 2:30 pm prior to the services, which will be Friday, October 2, at 2:30 p.m. at the Mink Creek LDS Chapel, 8200 W. Portneuf Road, Pocatello, Idaho 83204. Interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery, 1520 S. 5 th Ave. Pocatello, ID 83204. "How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard." Winnie the Pooh. As her family and friends its most difficult saying goodbye. Our hearts break, we Love you, we know we will see you again.
