Kristie returned to her Heavenly Father on September 11, 2024 with her loved ones at her side, having valiantly fought the battle with cancer for the third time. She was 57.
Kristie was born in Ogden, Utah, on February 20, 1967, then moved at age 6 months to Calgary, Alberta, Canada where the family lived for four years while her father was the Director of the LDS Institute at the University of Calgary. Three siblings joined her there, Michael, Russell, and Sherri.
The family moved to Pocatello in 1971. Kristie attended Pocatello High School, then earned degrees from Ricks College and Idaho State University, receiving a Master's Degree. She served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Manila, Philippines. She then began teaching for School District #25. She taught for over 30 years at Washington Elementary in various grade levels. Later she taught Junior High students at Bear Lake School District in Montpelier and enjoyed that experience tremendously. She loved her students. She was a very successful and popular teacher who was committed to loving and teaching every child in her care.
Her greatest joy and accomplishment was being a mother. With all her heart she loved her three children, Kassie, Jakob, Erika, and son-in-law Jason. She was a wonderful mother to them.
They went to every zoo they could find when they were little and progressed to going on cruises when they were older. She wanted to give them everything to make their lives rich and fulfilling.
Kristie had a short life but she packed great amounts of activities into it! She loved to travel and was very adventurous. She went to all 50 states by age 30 and went to 20 foreign countries. Her first major trip was to Greece with her high school friends, then she attended our sister city in Japan. Later she went to Austria, Switzerland, Italy and Germany with college friends from Pocatello. Her children went with her to the Bahamas, Mexico, and the Oregon Coast. They loved their traveling adventures together.
She was active in the community. She held Flag Day parties in her neighborhood with a patriotic program. She shared vegetables from her wonderful garden with neighbors.
She had a gift for loving people and staying close to her friends. She has stayed close to friends from high school through the years and they were great treasures who helped her through her illnesses. Lasting friendships are one of her gifts.
She is the daughter of Jim and Karen Johnston and is the oldest of the eight Johnston children. Each of them loved and respected her for her kindness and creativity. Her siblings are Michael, Russell, Sherri, Suzanne, Eric, Greg, and Jeff.
