Karen Jane Thyberg Shaw

d. February 22, 2015

Karen Jane Shaw, 69, passed away February 22, 2015 surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Pocatello to Roy Lamar Thyberg and Maxine Ruth Whitworth Thyberg. She attended school K through 12 in Pocatello along with her three siblings, Stan, Royce, and Janice. Growing up, she spent a lot of outdoor time with sisters, brother, cousins and friends in the hills around Inkom and Pocatello. She was adept at sports. She and her sisters excelled at synchronized swimming. Karen won second place in a State diving meet. She was also competitive in winter ski racing. Starting in 1974, Karen became seriously attracted to Larry Shaw, and their feelings were mutual. Larry and Karen married in June of 1976. Shortly after, Larry adopted her fine young son, Stein. In 1977 and 1980, respectively, they were blessed with the arrival of wonderful sons, Ryan and Eric. In 1981 they bought their "dream home" which bordered the undeveloped and wooded foothills of Pocatello's west bench. Then in 1986 the "icing on the cake" arrived in the form of their beautiful daughter, Kristen. From that time on, as their kids grew up and added their own friends to the already-large extended family, Karen & Larry enjoyed opening their home into a popular place to be at by all (including lots of dogs). Their unlocked doors always swung open. They were good hosts and good cooks and taught their kids how to be likewise. All causes for celebrations, such as birthdays, holidays, anniversaries and "it's-great-to-be-alive days," were going on more often than not. Karen was an excellent homemaker. Her expansive, tasty meals were always punctuated with numerous types of finger foods. Her love of nature was profusely exhibited with her large garden of trees, flowers and vegetables. While staying at Mackay, she loved to fix her sights on the panorama view of Idaho's tallest mountains while inhaling crystal-clean air. While at Larry's encampment in Baja, Mexico she delighted in feeding and watching the multitude of birds, enjoying the awe-inspiring sunsets at Sunset Beach, whale watching and wading in the cool waters at the beach. She loved to travel. They made numerous business and family trips, mostly to the Pacific coast from Alaska to the tip of Baja Mexico. She was always ready to come back home! She is survived by her husband, Larry; children, Ryan Shaw, Eric Shaw, Kristen Combs (Matt), Stein Shaw (Amy) of Challis, ID, and Trina (Alan) Thompson, of Orem, UT. Also surviving Karen are her grandchildren and great-grandchildren Sarah Shaw, Justin Shaw, Riley Shaw, Levi Shaw, Necia (Thompson) Barret, Kaily (Thompson) Webster, Tori Thompson Hutchings, Kate Thompson, Cody Thompson, Spencer Thompson, Brooklyn Webster, and Liam Combs; her brother, Stan Thyberg, and her sister, Royce Gordon. She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy Lamar Thyberg and Maxine Ruth Thyberg, and her sister, Janice Crawford. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 21, 2015 at 2:00 PM at the First Presbyterian Church, 202 S. 7 th . Ave., Pocatello, Idaho 83201.
