Joyce Elaine Holm 95, passed away on February 5, 2024.
Joyce Elaine Wright was born in Custer County, Nebraska, on October 2, 1928. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1946, then attended teacher training before starting as a beginning teacher for all grades in a one-room schoolhouse near Mason City.
On June 17, 1948, Joyce married C. Milan “Mike” Holm at her parent’s yard in Mason City. They lived in Mason for a few years, where son Tim and daughter Julie were born. Mike’s work resulted in their moving first to Minnesota, then Iowa where son Tom was born.
Mike and Joyce moved their young family to Pocatello, Idaho in December 1960. Joyce was a proud homemaker and mother, with many benefiting from her gardening, cooking, baking, and sewing skills. Her pies, especially, were sought after at pot-luck dinners at the Central Christian Church. She canned everything from the garden, and her dilly beans were legendary.
The kids thought she would always be at home, but she surprised everyone after the kids left the nest by getting a job in the fabric department at JC Penney, a perfect application of her skills. She worked at the original Main Street store then moved to the new Pine Ridge Mall store to work in home furnishings before retiring.
After both Joyce and Mike retired in the early 1990s, they enjoyed an active life of motorcycling, motor-homing, golf, card games, and other fun activities with many friends at their winter home in Mesa AZ as well as Pocatello. After taking their first-ever cruise for their 50th anniversary, they enjoyed other special cruises including the Panama Canal and Alaska.
After a happy marriage of almost 65 years, Mike died in 2013. Joyce continued living in Pocatello, since 2020 at Quail Ridge Assisted Living. She passed away on February 5, 2024, at age 95.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Mike, and by her two brothers, Garnet and Johnny Wright of Broken Bow, NE. She is survived by her sons Tim Holm, Tom Holm and daughter-in-law Joy Holm of Pocatello, daughter Julie and son-in-law Harold Burton of Wilmington NC, grandchildren Shawn and Danielle Holm, Jennifer Cardenas, and Rick Neifert of Pocatello, and two great-grandchildren.
The family is grateful for the care Joyce received at Quail Ridge as well as the services of Simbii Home Health & Hospice.
