John Stephen Farnsworth

d. March 16, 2018

John Stephen Farnsworth passed away peacefully on March 16, 2018 at Quail Ridge Assisted Living Home in Pocatello, Idaho. He was born July 4, 1918 to John Freeman Farnsworth and Agnes Murdock Livingstone and was 99 years old at the time of his death. John married Jennie Hess on May 21, 1941 in Pocatello, Idaho. They are the parents of four sons. They were married for 63 years. John was a firefighter for the Pocatello, Idaho Fire Department for 28 years, and was retired for over 40 years. He enjoyed his years of service and enjoyed telling stories of the many fires that occurred during his years with the fire department. Serving as a fireman was truly a great source of pride for him and gave him many fond memories to share and enjoy in his later years. John loved to travel. He was always ready to "go somewhere." He and his wife, Jennie, enjoyed many trips before her passing, and he continued with his travels even after she was gone. Just a few of his trips included: an Alaskan Cruise, where he took a helicopter flight to a see a glacier, a train ride through Napa Valley in California, a trip to Mexico to the Riviera Maya, many trips to visit his son in Milwaukee, WI where he toured the Henry Ford Museum in Detroit, Michigan, the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry in Illinois, Lambeau Field in Green Bay, WI, Miller Park, home of the Milwaukee Brewers, and the Bradley Center, home of the Milwaukee Bucks in Milwaukee, WI. His adventurous spirit and love of travel was what made his years of retirement a joy to him. John served as a volunteer at the Pocatello Bishops Storehouse for 13 years. He started in 2004 and would arrive at 8 am every Tuesday and Thursday to stock shelves. John was 98 years old at that time and as far as the Global Operations Manager knew, John was the only one serving as a volunteer at his age. John often said serving made him feel useful and gave him purpose. Through his dedication and desire to serve, many lives have been touched. John is preceded in death by his wife, Jennie Hess Farnsworth; his daughter-in-law, Lanette Farnsworth; and his grandchildren, Dena Farnsworth, Traci Ann Engdahl, Amber Farnsworth and Robert Farnsworth. Also four siblings preceded him in death, Hazel Johnson, Laura Thompson, Bert Farnsworth, and Eldora Arana. John (Jack) is survived by his four sons, Steven, Keith (Cheryl), Gaylen (Kathy) and Kenneth Farnsworth; and a sister, Marion Rowe of Detroit, Michigan. John had 18 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great-grandchildren. We wish to thank the following: The Pocatello Fire Department for the many breakfasts and hours of friendship they so graciously extended to our father during his later years of retirement. This meant a lot to him. Quail Ridge for the outstanding care and compassion they provided to him during his years of residence there. And a special thank you to Shelley Morgan, who became his traveling companion and best friend in these last years. Thank you so much to all of these people who went out of their way to make our fathers last years comfortable and enjoyable.
