John Paul Redd

John Paul Redd, 89, passed away Oct. 8, 2018 at home surrounded by family. Born and raised in Raymond, Alberta, Canada, he was always proud to be born on Dominion Day, July 1, 1929. He was the youngest of six children born to Paul Hardison and Grace Brandley Redd, and the only boy. His five sisters were ecstatic to have a little brother, and he was beloved of them throughout his life. John was very active in his youth in farm clubs and scouts, earning the rank of Canadian King Scout. He started building as a pre-schooler, built homes and furniture and remodeled houses throughout his life, particularly in Pocatello. He was valedictorian of his high school graduating class and was on the high school yearbook staff. A life-long member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served an honorable mission from Dec . 1949 to Apr. 1952 in Australia, travelling to and from the port cities of Vancouver, B. C. and Sydney, Australia on the cruise ship "Aorangi", spending a total of 7 weeks on the Pacific Ocean. He served in many church teaching and administrative capacities, including that of a temple ordinance worker and sang in church and other choirs throughout his life with his beautiful voice. John met Sherrill Edna Drake at B.Y.U., and they married Dec. 21, 1954 in the Cardston, Alberta, Temple. Married for almost 64 years, they have experienced a very happy and rewarding life with their family of eight special children and their spouses and families. John holds a BSc degree in Agronomy (B.Y.U.), a MSc in Soil Physics (U. of Wisc.), a BSc in Education (U. of Alberta), Administrative credentials and a 6th Year Educ. Cert. (I.S.U.) He taught high school math and sciences in Medicine Hat, Alberta, 5th Grade at I.S.U. Campus School, 8th Grade Campus School at Humboldt State College in Arcata, Calif., and 6th Grade at Jefferson Elementary in Pocatello and spent 24 years as a principal at Whittier and then Syringa Elementary Schools. He and Sherrill have lived and raised their growing family in Utah, Wisc., Alberta, Calif., and Pocatello. He was the best of husbands, fathers, grandfathers, etc., with a special laugh. He was kind and loving and a man without guile, and most importantly, a man of God, with a strong and abiding faith in, and testimony of, his Savior, Jesus Christ. He will be sorely missed. John was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters; five brothers-in-law; son, Paul; granddaughter, Alaina; and parents-in-law. He is survived by his wife, Sherrill; sons, John D. (Jacalyn), Phillip (Cherry Ann), Andrew (Angie); and daughter-in-law, Chris; daughters, Jane (Val), Susan (Jeff), Rebecca (Garth), and Diane (Ted); 41 grandchildren and 69 great-grandchildren; with two coming. A viewing will be held on Friday, October 12, 2018 from 6:30-8:30 pm at Colonial Funeral Home, 2005 S. 4 th Ave. Pocatello, ID. Funeral services will be on Saturday, October 13, 2018 at 2:00 pm in the Princeton Ward Chapel, 42 Princeton Ave. Pocatello, with a viewing from 12:30-1:30 pm prior. Interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery, 1520 S. 5 th Ave. Pocatello, ID. The family would like to thank the nursing staff at P.M.C. and especially the nurses and other staff members of Encompass Home Health and Hospice for their loving, empathetic, and gentle care of our loved one. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Encompass.
