John O. Cotant Jr.

John Oliver Cotant Jr., 93, long time Mayor of Chubbuck, ID, passed away April 3, 2018 at the Idaho State Veterans Home, with his family at his side. John was born in American Falls, ID on June 14, 1924 son of John Oliver and Dora Cotant. As a young boy, he moved to the city of Alameda. He graduated from Pocatello High School in 1942. In his youth he enjoyed baseball, basketball and Trap shooting. In 1942 he was a member of the Pocatello High School State Championship basketball team. John served in World War II in the South Pacific in the Army Air Corps. Upon arriving home, in 1946, he married Alice Nixon. They had two boys, J. O. and Ralph and one daughter, Margo. At this time John began operating Cotant Truck Lines with his father J. O. Cotant Sr. They raised their family in north Pocatello and the Chubbuck area. In 1969 he ran as a write in candidate for Mayor of the city of Chubbuck and won. He served 36 years and retired at the age of 81. It was difficult for him to leave the job of Mayor of Chubbuck. He missed the employees and interaction with the people of both the city of Chubbuck and the Pocatello area. He spent a lot of fun times with family and traveling many places with his sweet heart, Alice. John is survived by his children, J.O. (Kathy) Cotant III, Ralph Cotant and Margo Anne Christensen; 12 grandchildren; numerous great and great-great-grandchildren; and siblings, DonaLe Henderson, Don (Faye) Cotant and Diane McMaster. He was preceded in death by his sweet heart, Alice; parents, J. O. and Dora Cotant; his brother, Richard K. Cotant and his sister-in-law, Beverly (Wilson) Cotant; brothers-in-law, Sidney B. Henderson and Laddy J. McMaster; many aunts and uncles; and his nephews, Kent, Donny, Robert, and Curtis Cotant. A viewing will be held on Sunday, April 8, 2018 from 6-8 pm at Colonial Funeral Home, 2005 S. 4 th Ave. Pocatello, ID. Funeral services will be on Monday, April 9, 2018 at 11 am at the LDS Chubbuck 2 nd Ward Chapel, 4775 Hawthorne Rd. Chubbuck, Idaho, with a viewing for one hour prior at the church. Burial, with Military Honors, will take place at the Rockland Cemetery.
