John Edward Amodie

June 22, 1938 — September 29, 2019

John Edward Amodie, 81, passed away on Sunday evening, September 29, 2019 at the Idaho State Veterans Medical Center in Boise, Idaho.

John was born on June 22, 1938 in Providence, Rhode Island to Charles and Alice (Green) Amodie. His childhood was tragically altered when his mother passed away from diphtheria when he was only three years of age. He was then moved to the Sisters of Mercy Orphanage. At the age of 17, he enlisted in the Air Force and served for four years. From there he attended the University of Rhode Island where he earned his Bachelor of Science Degree and became a Registered Nurse.

In 1965, John enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the Combat Green Beret Special Forces. Tragedy struck John again, this time it took his young family. In 1968, his daughter, Angela passed away from Leukemia; his wife, Laurie, passed away six months later. John continued his service in the military by serving two tours in Vietnam, and one in Desert Storm. He attained the ranking of a Sergeant. He was a highly decorated veteran and received a number of honors and recognitions. He retired after twenty-six years of service in the Army Special Forces.

John was in California when he met and love found his heart with Martha Louise. They moved to Pocatello, Idaho. They were married at the POW/MIA Rally held in Pocatello in 2008. He immediately began volunteering at the Idaho State Veterans Home there. His volunteer service was primarily in the Canteen; however he would lend a hand wherever needed, he would be found watering the flowers, visiting with veterans, and always assisting them to meals and going on their outings. In 2012, his service as a volunteer was recognized by a Spirit of Freedom Award.

In the recent years, he and Martha moved to Mountain Home, Idaho to be closer to the medical care she needed. They continued to enjoy their trips to Jackpot. Their time together was always an adventure! His love and devotion was evident as he cared for her in her failing health. On January 16th of this year, he held her as she slipped away, and his heart was broken for the last time. He was never the same, and his health deteriorated quickly following her passing.

He is survived by dear friends, comrades; and a brother, Charles Amodie. He was preceded in death by his wife, Laurie, wife, Martha; his daughter, Angela; his parents, and siblings James Amodie, Thomas Amodie, William Amodie and Alice Kane.

Graveside services will be held for John at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, October 8, 2019 at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery – Boise, with the full Military Honors he as always requested.
