Joel Bowen

August 9, 1947 — June 4, 2021

Our wonderful father, grandfather and friend passed away peacefully on the morning of June 4, 2021. He was born August 9, 1947, at Caribou Memorial Hospital in Soda Springs, Idaho to Joseph H. and Maude Bowen. Joel grew up at the Cove hydro plant on the Bear River, running the hills, fishing, hunting and country fun. He graduated from Grace High School excelling in wrestling and track and field.

He married Janeal McCulloch in the Idaho Falls Temple October 14, 1966. They were later divorced on July 20, 1978. He married Deann Grosbeck in 1979 they would later divorce in 1988. Joel married Gail Bowen September 10, 1988, in the Ogden, Utah Temple.

Joel joined the Air Force on the Enlistment program in January of 1967. He reported to Lacklund Air Force Base in Texas. After boot camp he went to Electronics school for training in Biloxi Mississippi graduating in the spring of 1968. From there he was assigned to the Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas, Nevada. In the fall of 1969, he was sent to Southeast Asia to serve in the Vietnam War. He was discharged from the Air Force in October of 1972.

With boundless energy Joel enjoyed the beauty of nature through camping, hunting, fishing, boating, and gardening. He enjoyed the family cabin with his children and family.

Joel loved the Savior Jesus Christ. He enjoyed membership in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, serving in scouting, primary, High Priest group leadership and counselor in the Bishopric.

Joel was employed with Texas Gulf in Green River, Wyoming. He also worked for Hill Air Force Base in Clearfield, Utah as an Electronics Specialist for 27 years. Retiring in May 2008.

Joel is survived by his wife Gail; children Reann Bowen Hurless (Scott), Taren Joel Bowen (Holly), Rayelle Bowen Wheeler (David); stepchildren Kari Olar (Boyd), Natalie Breitweiser (Gary), Todd Williams (Shelly), Jana Havey (Scott) and Robby Williams (Harmony); 35 grandchildren (2 deceased) and 23 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by parents Joseph and Maude Bowen; sister Marla King; a brother Farel Bowen; one grandson Kennan Joel Bowen; a granddaughter Megan Marie Bowen; two stillborn daughters Crystal and Stephanie Bowen.

A Funeral service will be at 11:00 AM Saturday, June 12, 2021, at the Kinghorn LDS building, 1700 Kinghorn Rd. Pocatello, Id. 83202. A viewing will be from 9:00 AM to 10:45 AM at the church prior to the service. Interment will be held at the Beaver Dam Cemetery, Beaver Dam UT. (Collinston).
