Joan Whiting

d. August 12, 2018

Joan Myrtle (Innes) Whiting, long time resident of Pocatello passed away peacefully on August 12, 2018 as she slept. She was the only child of Nellie Marjorie (Pelton) Innes and Joseph Hugh Innes, and was born in Missoula, Montana on July 13, 1937. Joan grew up and attended schools in Spokane, Washington, Missoula, Montana, Billings, Montana, and Salmon, Idaho She and her mother had moved from Montana and were living in Salmon, Idaho when she met Alvin Lee Whiting. After a brief courtship and engagement the two were married on April 16, 1955 in Pocatello, Idaho just a few weeks before Joans graduation from Salmon High School. The couple made their home in Pocatello where they both enrolled in courses at Idaho State College, Joan in micro-biology and chemistry. She also played the drum in the ISC marching band. Joan and Alvin were blessed with four children, Julie Ann, Jonell, James Lee (Jimmy), deceased, and Michael Len (Mike). Joan was a wonderful wife and mother who devoted her life to her family. She had an outgoing personality, and made friends easily. She was always thinking of others and seeing to their needs. She would be right at home in a fancy restaurant or happy as a clam jeepn and camping with her family. Joan had learned to play the piano and accordion while in her youth and loved sharing these talents with others. Once all four children were in school all day Joan enrolled in the LPN program at St. Anthonys Mercy Hospital. She worked exceptionally hard to earn the right to wear her nurses cap and did so proudly. Her nursing career spanned thirty plus years. Tragedy struck when Joans eldest son James Lee (Jimmy) passed away suddenly and very unexpectedly due to injuries sustained in a car/ pedestrian accident. A year later (In the Idaho Falls Temple) Joan, Alvin, and their three surviving children were sealed as a family for time and for all eternity. Joan is survived by her two daughters, Julie Ann (Duane) Lewis, of Nampa, ID and Jonell (Merlin) Hansen of Pocatello, ID; son, Michael (Holly Hansen) Whiting also of Pocatello, ID; eleven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Joan is also survived by a step-sister, Beverlee Zahara of Arizona. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Alvin Lee Whiting; as well as a son, James Lee; and a great-grandson. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 16, 2018 at 11 am at Colonial Funeral Home, 2005 S. 4 th Ave. Pocatello, ID, with a viewing for one hour prior.
