Joan June Aplington, 89, passed away peacefully in her sleep, on April 03, 2023, in Pocatello, Idaho. The weeks preceding her death, her family and friends from far and near were able to visit and spend special time with her.
Joan was born in Weiser, Idaho, on January 18, 1934, she was the second of three daughters born to Frederick and Grace Hemenway. She graduated from Weiser High School in 1952.
While attending school in Spokane Washington, she met Edward Aplington, a school mate from Weiser who was serving as an air policeman at Fairchild Air Force Base, Spokane. They married and after Ed received an honorable discharge from the air police, they moved to Weiser, where Ed and Joan became managers of the Hemenway ranch. Ed joined the Idaho State police, and they lived in northern Idaho for several years.
Joan raised her three young boys in northern Idaho and loved spending time with them on the lakes. She enjoyed fishing, mountains, trees, and soaking up the sunshine. She and the boys would spend many summer days at Sanders beach on Coeur d' Alene Lake.
In 1972 Ed received a promotion in the Idaho State police, that took Joan and the boys to Pocatello.
Joan ran a small catering business with her good friend Kay. She even catered her oldest son’s wedding dinner.
After the death of her husband, Joan took to traveling to find more sunshine with her family and her good friends. She enjoyed many trips to California with Roger and Joyce, her sister and brother-in-law.
Her grandchildren have fond memories of holidays spent at her house. She had a way of making sure they felt welcomed and loved. She was so proud of each of them.
Joan was happiest when she was surrounded by the people she loved most. She will be remembered for her happy laugh and infectious smile.
Joan is survived by her younger sister Joyce Perkins, of Boise, Idaho; her three sons, Fred, Matt, and Todd and their spouses; eight grandchildren and twenty two great-grandchildren.
She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was known as "Nanny or Nanna" by her grandchildren. She loved being with her family and friends. She will be missed by all who know her, especially by her family.
