Jean Smart

Ethel Jean Smart ("Jean"), our cherished, loving and devoted mother, wife and grandmother, passed away at home with family in Lincoln, CA on November 20, 2017. She was born in McCammon, ID on February 20, 1926 to Oliver W. and Pearl E. Harris. Jean came from humble, depression-era beginnings. Her parents raised 11 children in a two-room log cabin with no electricity and no plumbing. Jean met the love of her life, Vern Smart, while working at Union Pacific when Vern was home on leave from WWII. They married on May 24, 1946 and had three children, Vickie, Linda and Randy. Vern and Jean also helped raise Verns little brother, Gordon, when Gordons and Verns parents were tragically taken at an early age. Though both Jean and Vern were very poor as children, they worked tirelessly to rise above their childhood circumstances and earned a good life for their young family. Jean embraced life and deeply loved her family. She was a spirited, vibrant lady who took on challenges with steadfastness. Jean was a member of the LDS church. Jean had the heart of an angel and always tried to do the right thing. She was a wonderful friend, who was engaging and a good companion. Jean worked as a secretary and later as a bookkeeper. She was a full-time mother and wife; teaching her children good values, maintaining the home, and also working a full-time job. Jean and Vern had been married for 63 years when he passed away in 2009. Despite medical problems, Jean continued her independence in her own home until she was 88. Even then she remained in her own home with assistance until heaven beckoned. Jean is survived by her two daughters, Vickie R. Price (Randy) and Linda Foster (Guy William); 6 grandchildren, Darin Stoddard, Derek Stoddard, Daniel McGarry, Chrystal McGarry, Daryl Stoddard, and Amber Peterson; and 9 great-grandchildren. Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Vernal R. Smart; son, Randall E. Smart; and 10 siblings, O. Khalil Harris, Twila A. Smith, Thressa H. Binggeli, G. Fern McCardell, Mary B. Parkinson, Theo Morgan, Marjorie F. Miles, Calvin C. Harris, Colleen P. Tewalt, and E. Duwayne Harris. She was the last surviving child of the Oliver Harris family. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 2, 2017 at 11 am at the LDS McCammon Stake Center, 403 W. 16th St. McCammon, ID, with a viewing from 9:30-10:50 am prior to the services. Burial will follow at the Norton Cemetery.
