James Elwood Maynard

October 25, 1948 — August 8, 2019

James E. Maynard, 70, passed away Thursday evening, August 8, 2019 in Pocatello, Idaho. Born and raised in Pocatello, the son of Rulon D. Maynard and Edith M. (King) Maynard, was a lifelong resident of Bannock County. As a boy, he loved playing with his Lionel Trainset. This childhood joy and love continued to stem into his teenage and adult years with James working on HO model trains and drafting new ideas for scenery. He also enjoyed time at his grandparents ranch riding horses and playing with his cousins. Everyone knew that James loved cars, but in truth, we always knew that this fascination for cars was mainly driven by his lead foot. Something he inherited from his mother. The car that fulfilled this need for speed was his 1970 Firebird Formula 400. James and his high school best friend for life, Martin, had many adventures. Their love for playing basketball continued all the way through their college years. Surprisingly, none of those many escapades landed them in big trouble, but a pair of notorious pranksters they were none the less. Countless stories of his days with Martin were shared around the family dinner table. At 26 years old, as the truck parts manager for Pauls GMC, James was completely smitten with a young, confident, and beautiful delivery parts girl from Motor Merc. After several attempts to muster some courage to ask this girl out, James finally asked Sherrie out on a date. Exactly one year later, they were married. James and Sherrie went on to have two sons: Shawn and Larry (L.J.) Maynard. Much of his life was devoted to his family and work. Throughout his life, James had a passion for driving. As he became older, nothing would bring him more joy than going for a long drive with his wife. Following the passing of Jims father in law, Jim and Sherrie would spend much time with Sherries mother Margie and took many trips as a trio. He especially enjoyed taking the UTV up into the mountains with his family. James is survived by his wife, Sherrie; his sons and their wives, Shawn (Mori), Larry (Brittney); his grandsons, Taylor with wife, Secoya, Morgan; one great-grandchild Mila, and his mother-in-law Margie Stewart.
