Jack Howard Kremer

d. August 12, 2017

Jack Howard Kremer, 93, passed away four days before his 94th birthday, Saturday, August 12, 2017 at the Idaho State Veterans Home in Pocatello, Idaho. Jack was born August 16, 1923 in Upland, California. He was the only son of Irvin and Esther Leona Kremer. He was raised and went to school in Upland, California. Jack had a fascination with avionics since he was a small boy and would hang out at the airfields, volunteering to do odd jobs and work in the hangers. Because of his love for flying, Jack dropped out of school to join the Army Air Corps. He was immediately recognized as a very talented pilot and instructor. After Boot Camp and flight school, and because of his meticulous nature, he was commissioned as commander of the B-17 Flying Fortress and trained hundreds of pilots that fought in World War II. He knew full well that many would never return and he took his job very seriously training them the very best he could. After the war, Jack was involved in the aerospace industry. He started working for North American, which later became North American/Rockwell which ended up being Rockwell. He was involved with the early space flights and most recently a project manager with the US Space Shuttle. Over the course of his career he had relationships with several astronauts and at one time, John Glenn and Ed White paid a visit to his house to comfort Jack's son, John Kremer, who was 15 years old and dying of cancer. Jack and Kathies love for the outdoors and appreciation of all animals and creatures was passed down to their children. They were often called upon to rescue and care for injured or endangered animals. This included snakes, desert tortoises, cats, dogs, birds, a donkey, and other interesting creatures. Jack married Violetta Katherine "Kathie" Marks on May 26, 1944 in Whittier, California. Together they had three children, Richard, Susan, and John. He was preceded in death by his son John; and his beautiful wife, Katherine; and a great-grandson, Matthew. He is survived by his son, Richard Kremer; daughter, Susan (Ron) Francis; 4 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Elsa was a great great-granddaughter and he loved his many visits with her as he wheeled her around on his wheelchair. Funeral services will be held at 11 am on Wednesday, August 16, 2017 at the Idaho State Veterans Home, 1957 Alvin Ricken Dr. in Pocatello, with a viewing from 9:30 -10:30 am prior to the services.
