Irene Nelson Chavez, 83, passed away on May 7, 2017 at Portneuf Medical Center from an ongoing illness. Irene was born May 17, 1933, in Leupp, AZ on the Navajo Nation; into the Tachii'nii (Red Running Into The Water People Clan) born for Tsi'naajinii (Black Streak Wood People Clan). She had nine children with her late husband, Ernest Thompson. She later married Steven H. Chavez in 1975 and they moved to Idaho Falls, ID. She worked her entire life as a laborer. She was a member of the Native American church and carried water. In her early years, she would weave Navajo rugs and make quilts. She enjoyed traveling and spending time with her grandchildren. She was grandma to everyone and was very loving. She is survived by her husband, Steven Chavez; daughters, Loretta and Marley Thompson; sons, Harry, Henry, Alfred, Tommy and Larry Thompson; 15 grandchildren, and 27 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by, Ernest Monroe Thompson, Robert (Clara Buck) Thompson, Lorrine Thompson, and Elyas San Diego-Reyes Trevino. Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 11, 2017 from 5-8 pm at Colonial Funeral Home, 2005 S. 4 th Ave. Pocatello, ID. Funeral services will be on Friday, May 12, 2017 at 11 am also at Colonial Funeral Home with a visitation for one hour prior to the services. Burial will follow at the American Falls Cemetery.
