Hyrum "Evan" Horton

February 4, 1934 — December 30, 2018

Hyrum "Evan" Horton 84, passed away on Sunday, December 30, 2018 at his home. Evan was born in Pocatello, Idaho on February 4, 1934. His family moved to the Tyhee area, where he grew up working on the family farm during the depression era. He was the middle child of three and the only son. Evan attended Pocatello High School, where he competed on the high school boxing team. Evan married Jerry Lee Parker in 1961, and they had three sons, Michael, Kenneth, and David. They later divorced in the early nineties. As a little boy, Evan helped his father take care of the family farm, milking cows, collecting eggs, cleaning chicken coops, etc. It was very hard work for him, but it was a necessity to keep the family alive during the depression era and World War II. Even though it was a difficult time for Evan, that didnt stop him from enjoying being a boy as he explored the area with his childhood friends. He continued to work on the family farm into his adulthood until it was sold. Evan worked locally as a truck driver with Garrett Freightlines for thirty-two years. During that time, he was drafted into the United States Army and served as a medic for two years. He then returned to Garrett Freightlines and drove truck, servicing the Yellowstone Park area. He often spoke of his experiences there, especially the Hebgen Lake earthquake of 1959. From his cabin, he could see the ground roll like waives of grain. After being injured on the job, Evan took a medical retirement in 1984. Evan enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping with his sons. He often spent time exploring the Arco Desert. Evans family would like to thank Heritage Healthcare and Hospice for their unconditional love and care they provided to our father during his last two years of life. The nursing staff was unwavering in their dedication in making sure Evan was completely taken care of the way he wanted to be. Whenever any of the nursing staff walked in the door, his face would light up. They brought joy to his life each time they were at his home, so to each of you who our father had the blessing of knowing, thank you! There are not enough words to describe our appreciation for your loving care of our dad. We are so very grateful for you!
