Howard Gibson

Longtime Pocatello resident and local business man, Howard E. Gibson, passed away on Saturday, May 13, 2017 due to natural causes and complications of Parkinson's Disease.

Howard was born on September 2, 1928, in Burley, Idaho to Edgar Clarence and Nettie Luella (Wilkins) Gibson. He was the 4th child in a family of 12 children. Howard attended school in Burley until the 8th grade when his family moved to Pocatello. Howard attended Irving Jr. High and graduated from Pocatello High School.

Howard met the girl of his dreams, Maurine James, on a blind date. They dated for 6 months and were married on April 13, 1949 in the Idaho Falls Temple. Eleven months later, their first son, Terry, joined their family. Howard was employedby Safeways and soon after was transferred to Logan, then to Tremonton as the store manager. While living in Tremonton, their 2nd son Gary joined their family. Howard wanted to make a career change and so he and mom decided to move to Pocatello.

Howard joined the Pocatello fire department. It was here that their 3rd child was born, Suzan. After 3 years on the fire department Howard went shopping for a grocery store to buy. He found one in Arco and packed up the family. His father in law and brother in law joined him in this adventure. While in Arco, Karen, their 4th child and Kurt, their 5th child was born. Life was very busy with running the store, being appointed mayor of Arco, being the Bishop, and later in the Stake Presidency, but Howard enjoyed that time. Again he wanted to pursue other interests and decided to sell the store.

After it sold, they moved back to Pocatello and Howard went to work for Clark Real Estate. He obtained his Broker's license and was on his way. He enjoyed working for Clarks' but again felt the desire to be his own boss. He started Gate City Real Estate and enjoyed great success there. He also went into the development/building business and developed many subdivisions in the Pocatello area. Howard sold Gate City Real Estate to Gordon Wilks. Later he was approached by Coldwell Banker Landmark and offered a job as the broker. He worked there for a few years then retired only to come out of retirement shortly afterward and join them again. Howard always said Pocatello was good to him.

Howard is survived by 4 children, Terry (Leone) Gibson, Gary (Sandra) Gibson, Karen (Steve)Farnsworth, Kurt (Anita) Gibson, 15 grandchildren, 30 Great-Grandchildren. Howard would always say that his greatest accomplishment was his family. He was also proud of his yard and was known for his perfectly shaped trees. He loved to garden and even though it was small it was very bountiful. Thank you dad for your example of Christ-like behavior. We love you.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 20, 2017 at the LDS chapel on 1433 Gwen Drive in Pocatello. A viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. On Friday, May 19th at Wilks Funeral Home 211 W. Chubbuck Rd. and one hour prior to services at the church. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery.
